I suspect that most Old Légionnaires would be more jealous than offended that the Légion used planes to get to Timbuktu. More recent ones would probably comment "Why the f*** are they still using C-160 Transalls! Why doesn't l'Armée de l'Air have something more recent!" ;-)

Having read Simon Murray...'s Legionnaire: Five Years in the..., I suspect the old-timers are glad they got to the C-160.  He mentions what seem to be C-119's and also H-21's.

FWIW dept: C-160's are a newer design than the C-130.

Do you cargo birds come with 4 or 2 engines, just thought I would ask?

They were probably Nord Noratlas's rather than C-119's. Both had a very simillar configuration and are easy to mistake. However, the Noratlas were a French design, hence why the Légion used them rather than the Fairchild C-119's.
