Subject: Stryker and Crew Survive 500 Pound Bomb

The picture is of a U.S. Army Stryker that was hit by a 500 pound roadside bomb in northern Iraq on October 8th. The Stryker was hit on the right side while travelling down the road at about 60 kilometers an hour. The bomb was in a car parked by the side of the road, and went off as the Stryker drove by. The Stryker flipped over one and a half times and skidded about 30 feet. This bomb was so powerful that it knocked out lights in the rooms of soldiers at a base 2400 meters away. There were four soldiers in the Stryker, and none were hurt (aside from a ringing in the ears...). When the Stryker was flipped back upright, it was still able to move under its own power.

Arm chair veterans are really annoying old grunt, email me at [email protected] and I will send you some pics from 28 sep 04. There is some video of the STRYKER running on it's own and once I obtain it, it will be made available to you.

As much as I would like to read your response, I can't seem to open anything that was posted on the 21st. If you, are someone else, could copy and repost I would appreciate it.

Before you get too amazed I suggest that you read the thread starting around 10/15, at least go back as far as 10/19.

Old Grunt, thank you for the list! It mostly coincides with what I have compiled, but there are several differences that I would like to discuss further. To begin with, I have nothing on the following episodes: 02/18, 08/27, 08/29, 10/13. Is there any chance you can provide additional details on these incidents? On the other hand, there is an episode that is missing in your list, Jan.30 an RPG attack that caused minor damage, according to the following pretty reliable source: http://old.tribnet.com/news/iraq/stryker/story/4689081p-4641404c.html Next, regarding 08/10 event. Hasn't it occured 08/04? There were several decorations for Stryker crewmembers that reference 08/04, http://www.thenewstribune.com/news/military/stryker/story/4224093p-4014909c.html, plus a very convincing account here, http://cbftw.blogspot.com/2004/08/men-in-black.html both indicating Aug 4 as a day of heavy fighting with multiple hits on Strykers.

The easy ones first. I think the incident you reference on 30 Jan and the one that I reference on 2 Feb are the same incident. Some of the AAR's are in local time, some are in EST, and a few are in Zulu time so I could see a day's difference in dates between the news article and the AAR as entirely possible. Also the article text references the incident date as 30 Jan, but the caption under the picture refers to 2 Feb. It's possible that they are two seperate events, any AAR that contains operationally sensitive information is probably not in the database that I have access to. I think you're right about the Tribune. The news stories seem to track very closely to the AAR's that I have read. I believe that you are correct about the 08/04 vs. 08/10 event. The articles that you referenced have to be the events related in the AAR. I don't know why there is a date discrepency. Generally AAR data is collected at the debrief immediately at the conclusion of operations. Even allowing for a DTG difference, 5 days is a little outside the reasonable window. I wonder if the event date was transposed with the transmitted date of the AAR (?). I'll have to see what is cleared for public dessimination as far as details go in the 02/18,08/27,08/29, and 10/13 events. I'll check and see if there are any CENTCOM news releases on the events. Still hoping that Legion 46 or someone else can repost the 21 Nov entries.

Thank you for reply. I agree with you that a day or two drift is not at all uncommon, however I believe the 01/30 and 02/02 episodes are different. As you see, Mr.Gilbert goes to some length to emphasize that this was a hit above the grill, and arriving from the front. On the other hand, the 2/02 episode, which I've read about here, http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Feb2004/n02032004_200402031.html describes the shot arriving at the side, and specifically mentions that it impacted on the grill. I think it's unlikely they are talking about the same thing... Looking forward to whatever you will find possible to provide. It's pretty simple to compile the list of armor attack incidents when there were casualties involved, but I know of no easy way for non-AAR-endowed person to get good look at no casualties cases. As a result in the little list of mine almost every attack on a vehicle kills someone, which can't be right...

Not to stray too much off-topic, regarding the photograph that started this thread. Old Grunt, I notice that your compilation of AARs conspicuously lacks any event on October 8 (when the incident with this Stryker reportedly occured). During discussion of this photo on TankNet forum this vehicle has been identified as involved in the incident on October 11, where VBIED rammed a Stryker resulting in death of Staff Sgt. Michael L. Burbank. The episode matches the picture rather well, the only problem I see is that this picture was POSTED on 10/11 which would be difficult for the event that occured on the same day. Confusing.
