Subject: How to prevent Turkey from invading Iraq
SGTObvious    10/19/2007 1:28:57 PM
It is quite simple, really. The US must adopt the exact opposite of its current policy. Instead of telling Turkey that its a bad thing, Bush must publicly demand that Turkish troops aid the US in securing Iraq. Considering Turkish Pride, Turkish attitudes towards the US, and Turkish attitudes towards Bush, this will mean not one Turkish soldier steps across the border. SGTObvious

I also expect that the Turks would be out as quick as they can as they have no desire to appear as an occupier and there is little to gain by trying to stay there.

Paul

Just like Cyprus, Paul?

not a good comparison sgt.  cyprus has a lot of turkish civilians living there to protect while northern iraq is pretty much lacking in turkish civilians.

no, not like Cyprus, SGT Obvious....
you see, Cyprus has a significant number of Turks living there....     Iraq doesn't.

perhaps a better comparison might be with say...... previous Turkish strikes into Iraq... where they go in, do the job, then get out again...

why do you expect them to want to stay in northern Iraq? they would have to come down a lot further to get to anything even worth controlling ie oil, and thye would face world condemnation, insurgency and possibly clash with the US if the wanted to do that. the Turks are not stupid.

It's just so funny that some people think we'll just permanently invade Iraq and take over the oil and stuff. :) Well... what can I say? Keep dreaming?

Wrong.
You see, Iraq has MORE Turks than Cyprus does.  They are called Turkmen.  They speak Turkish.  They have Turkish customs.   What makes Turkish Cypriots, and not them, significant?

that was true...Mosul and Kerkük were in the borders of "misak-&&05; milli"(national borders of modern Turkey) in independence war.I mean the plan was to sack occupiers in that region too.But Turkey was in no shape to get into a new war against Britain..Brits suuported Kurds in the southeast and they revolted(look for Seyh Said revolt).Fighting that Kerkük and Mosul had to be delayed.Turk were in majority in some parts of N.Iraq but not anymore. They're either assimilated or sacked...some thousands even killed in past conflicts.

This time Turkey has no purpose to take over the region and it wouldn't do anything good either. This doesn't change the fact that many Turks think we should stay....

well the turkish cypriots were being "oppressed" by the greeks and the turks have very little love for the greeks going back a very long time.  the pkk doesn't seem to be interested in bothering the ethnic turks living in iraq on the other hand.

Turkey do not have any plans to invade Iraq.
Turkey have a plan to enter Iraq, destroy every PKK camp that we can find and leave.
That will not tomorrow, as winter aproaching probably not until spring.

But if Iraq and USA will not solve the problem of PKK using North Iraq as a terrorist haven, Turkish military will enter. Nothing can stop that. Not even our highly pro-American Turkish government. As more than 80% of Turkish people supports that action.

I wouldn't call this Turkish pride thing, but then the PKK is a terrorist organisation in my opinion.
Unfortunately the Turkish plans will only bring temporary relief unless something more fundamental is also done.

Turkey would have to balance the US interest in haaving a democratic Iraq and Turkey's interest in not having any terror attacks form the PKK. Not saying that I have all the answers, but some elements would be:
- Undermining the darling position the PKK has with the leftists in the West.
- Doing some business with Kurds in Iraq and also doing businesss with the US to pressure them.
- A side effect of doing business might be some compromise in the form of an amnesty for some former PKK members.
Difficult to do, because it lets some guys get away with the crap they've done.

It might even be beneficial for US interests in Iraq, because Turkey might stop the Kurds from forming an independand Kurdistan and screw any possibility of keeping Iraq as a nation intact.

The professionals ar propably much better at this

I think the Turkmen of Kirkuk will probably disagree with you.

i don't know the ground truth in this but i haven't heard anything about the turkmen being bothered.
