I think the name was inspired something like this. When the Levent Company traded with the Turkish Empire it brought back the local breed of pheasants to sell for rich folks feasts. Later the pilgrims saw what we now call "Turkeys" in North America and thought they looked similar. Hence the name. However that story is somewhat sketchy. If anyone(including a previous poster on this thread, that I havn't read)knows the story better, I would be interested in finding out.
