Subject: Shooting Around Corners
James Dunnigan    1/13/2005 11:07:48 PM

Currently undergoing field testing, a new ?shoot around corners? sight will be
shipped to Iraq later this year. The Parascope Urban Combat Sight allows troops
to fire around a corner, or over a barrier. The soldier does expose their hands
and arms to do this, but the head and body remain behind cover. The sight is
entirely optical, so there are no electronics or batteries to worry about.
Troops who have tested the device report that accuracy is very good, and the use
of the new sight would make urban combat faster, and safer. The Parascope mounts
on the standard rail found on most U.S. rifles.

Hasn't this existed for at least a year? Didn't I see a post about an Israeli weapon mounting a pistol in a swivelable frame?

No, this is different, it requires no weapon modification or electronics as the israeli system does. This system is just a periscope with crosshairs painted on the mirror that mounts to the rail on an m16/m4.

The Israeli system looks like a good one for certain operations, but it has two disadvantages: One, is that the weapon it uses is pistol (most of the pictures I've seen feature a Glock---good choice since to fire it you only have to pull the trigger). This is OK in close combat situations, but pistols are ballistically inferior to rifles in every way. The second disadvantage of the Israeli system is that it relies upon a video camera and video display in order for the shooter to see what he is shooting at. Despite these disadvantages, most police SWAT teams and military units would love to have it in their arsenal since it is perfect for urban operations. That said, a system that allows a soldier to shoot his rifle around corners without fancy electronic devices would be ideal. This is the first I have heard of this system, so I will be anxious to learn more about it. The Germans had a similar device attached to their Stg-44 rifles late in WW2. The sighting system was a rather clunky looking prism sight. From what I read the ballistics of the bullets fire through such a device were degraded because of the way gasses were release to allow the bullet to follow a curved barrel without damaging it. I'm looking forward to seeing how the Army took care of these issues. As I side note, I would like to comment on the radical R&D that has been taking place since the first troops stepped foot in Iraq in late 2001. Systems that would have taken a decade to develop in peacetime are being churned out and deployed in years or even months. Sure, you will get a few lemons, but this sort of accelerated R&D has saved a lot of lives and introduced a lot of equipment that might have died in the bureaucratic morass that is the Pentagon. I hope they keep up the good work.

Sorry. In late 2001 troops were hitting the ground in Afghanistan, not Iraq, of course. Maybe not a big deal, but I don't want to ignore the sacrifice and service of the guys that fought there.

Did my distription not suffice? This is a PERISCOPE mounted to a standard m16/m4 rail. There is no special gun, magic optics, curved barrel system, etc. link If you want pictures, think of an advanced version of this: link Except it mounts on the picatinny rail and uses a laser to indicate aiming.

I think you meant to write "description", and no, it probably wasn't enough for most of the readers of this thread. You only wrote four lines, which I doubt was enough to adequately describe the rifle. Remember, not all of the people who visit this site are military experts. The weapon Nichevo described is a real system being evaluated and deployed by different military forces. I was simply trying to explain how the new Army system would be tactically superior to the Israeli system, that's all. Mr. Dunnigan's post about the new accessory that allows soldiers to shoot around corners was the first I had heard of it. Learning about new military developments is one of the reasons I visit this site. I still have not seen a picture of this new system. The first link you posted was informative, but the second was a WW1 era photo of a periscope mounted to a bolt action rifle. I would hope the Army's new system looks a lot diffent than the monstrosity in the picture. I know it's pretty hot Down Under, Russ, but hey man, lighten up.

Repeat after me. "It is not a new rifle". Its just an accessory for existing rifles. In concept, it is no different than the WWI photo, its just implemented better. If you are unfamiliar with a rail system, look here: link Just mount a periscope and a laser on that rail system, and you are set to go.

Ok, ok, buddy. I don't want this to turn into a pissing match between (probably) like minds. I have a rail system mounted on the Colt Commando assigned to me on the SWAT team. I would just love to see how THIS one works. I understand that it is not a new weapons system. Friends, mate?

Ya, you just kept repeating, "new rifle". And unfortunately, I can't find any images, but for some reason, I get the impression I've seen one somewhere, here's a better idea: link Something similar to that mounted on the rail. Course, I prefer the land warrior system, but then, I'm biased.
