Subject: Does America have to abide by the same rules as the rest of the world?

The war in Iraq. The UN said no. Everyone wanted valid proof before authorizing ware. France and Germany teamed up on the U.S. and still they went right through them on their way to Iraq. Do they have to follow the same international rules as everyone else, or do they make their own as they go?

That question is more tricky than it sounds. There should be some international law-perhaps custom is a better word. The problem is when any power feels itself threatened substantially it will always put interest first(which is why I am against the land-mine treaty by the way; we aren't really virtuous enough to abstain so signing it is perjury before the fact). Perhaps "international law" is overreaching itself. On the little things most states will obey-because they are little. We can perhaps work are way up but it will take a bit of doing. In the meantime, I'm afraid that we are stuck in the old system. The system today is actually rather like the Iceland of Njalls Saga. Plenty of law but who enforces?
