There are 2 radically different scenarios, one in which the US intervenes somewhere else, and one where someone tries to invade the US. I doubt anyone can really invade the US. For the other possibility, it's not impossible that the US loose. Let's say you have a war against China and you don't have bases for the Air force. Will the carriers be sufficient to provide air support? The US didn't even win in Vietnam, it's not sure at all that they would beat a country like China with 1.5 billion people ready to give their lives to save their motherland from capitalism. Think about the Germans against the russians. There always comes a point where you are overwhelmed by numbers.

It is simply a varition of an ideology common among states of European orgin Rome, Greece, Switzerland, Holland, the Medieval city-states, and on and on all used to experment with that sort of thing. Who are those afegans that fight with the americans against the Taliban(how many of then were killed in action, how many americans soldiers weren´t killed thanks to then?). Now they have the new Iraqs army. Is there any stimative over their casualities? If there is not, it is very convinient, don´t you think? Ok, the USA army is the best, but do you think you can pay some russians or chineses to fight for you. I don´t believe that USA could take entire control of any organizated country(maybe Fiji Islands). They just won the last two wars because those nations had serious internals problens. Chechenia is a very, very diferent situation. There, everybody hates the russians and they are far better equiped than the medievals Talibans and the t-shirts Iraqs rebels. No country could invade America, everybody Knows.
