Subject: The American attitude
sooner    1/24/2004 12:40:16 PM
Americans have, for a long time now, been regarded as obnoxious, rude, and even a little y. Is it because of their mighty military dominance? Or is it the nature of the people? Does U.S. still have the most lethal military machine on earth?

One thing that always irritates me is the knee-jerk anti-Americanism abroad. However, I'm sure that a lot of people felt the same way about the British in the 19th Century (I know they did here in the States). When we invaded Afghanistan, I was dating a Bulgarian. She was livid that we were allowing all these people in mountainous regions that the Northern Alliance didn't occupy to starve. I was like... "Um, well, you can't really do food drops into a mountainous region; helicopters don't work well up there, and the Talibanis would shoot at them anyway; it would be stupid to put 50,000 or so ground troops in there, make a big, ugly show of it, and repeat the Soviet experience; and finally, I'm not going to ask an American solider to risk his life to feed someone who will probably be shooting at him four weeks later JUST because we're Americans." I'm not even a Republican, but you know, I don't have to be to realize that is the world we are living in. And frankly, who else would have bothered with feeding ANYONE in that country after 9/11? The Chinese? The Russians?

I can tell you one thing, if Indians, Chinese, or Africans had the overwhelming military, economic, and technological superiority that the US has, it is very likely that they would be much more "arrogant."
$13 trillion plus debt... very strong economy.  Id feel safe livibg in a fraudulent bubble?

The US made the mistake of entering WE I to save Europe from itself and has gotten nothing but abuse since. The world would be a better place had we had the sense and honesty to stay out.
