Subject: The American attitude
sooner    1/24/2004 12:40:16 PM
Americans have, for a long time now, been regarded as obnoxious, rude, and even a little y. Is it because of their mighty military dominance? Or is it the nature of the people? Does U.S. still have the most lethal military machine on earth?

America knows that she's invincible. If America wanted to, she could go to war with the rest of the world combined and win...No joke. I admire the American military achievements. Every other nation is pathetically weak in comparison.

That is not correct. We see our selves as only too vulnerable. Why else would we be leading the fight world wide on terror. I would say that deep down Americans are no different then any one else. We want to be happy, succesful and raise our families like anyone else. We have the most diverse population on Earth. So you could say that we represent the best of all peoples. The major difference I would say is Americans prefer, no, demand liberty over momentarty safety or security.

examples of the benevelance of American power: after WWII, Germany & Japan were completely at our mercy. We could have utterly destroyed them. (At least Japan & West Germany). Instead, we set up democracies and nurtured their economic recovery. Find one parallel example in all of history. Iraq & Afghanistan are 2 more examples of overtrhowing tyrannies and trying ot replace them with democratic governments thta benefit the people. Then we will leave. Now that we are practically ending our troop presence in Germany after 70 years, all we hear is regret from them about it. Give me one parallel example of such an occupation in history by the other Great Powers you mention. That said, the greatest powers in history, Rome & Britain, were boht benevelent by the standards of their times. The Romans let conquered peoepl keep their religions, and even local leaders to a large extent, as long as they paid the (admittedly high) taxes. Many conquered people thought the Pax Romana (Roman Peace) was preferable to the constant intercene warfare that was the norm of those times. The British also were less oppressive than other Eurpean colonialists and imperialists. The Birtish also believed in Free Trade, which was relatively helpful to their colonies and imperial empire. Of course, Rome, Britain, and any superpower, empire, or country pursued realpolitic, as America does. The World Wide Left (incl. US) criticise every US policy because they hate the US. Especially, they hate military action by Republican Presidents, because that is the mainstay of the current world order which tehy hope to overthrow. That is why the hard Left opposed even the war in Afghanistan. "At the University of North Carolina, teach-ins featured professors attacking America as a 'rogue state' and a greater terrorist threat than al Qaeda. At City University of New York, professors condemned 'American imperialism'."---Unholy Alliance, David Horowitz

I think you proved Celebrims point nicely with your post. Namely with this: "Shortly I think Americans are good willing village people who think a bit too much about their abilities." Good willing village people? It sounds very much like you are trying to look down on them as being bumpkins of a sort, and establish your own superior sophistication etc, which is precisely what Celebrim said that Europeans do. I think he was trying to make the point that the cultural differences are not conscious, they are subconscious and not necessarily malicious, and you proved that nicely.

Let's face it, since mankind consisted solely hairy monkeys swinging from the trees, it was always the ones with the biggest balls that would leave the fold and explore the boundaries of the world. The weak, inept, and stupid remained at home, while the the strong swaggered off across the savannah, swaying with the pendulous inertial force of their gigantic testicles. This trend has continued down through the ages, with the greatest of men venturing out and conquering the next frontier (although sometimes these were not voluntary expulsions - the weak and stupid can sometimes gang up on those they consider threatening and exile them). In any case, the Americas represent the last of the great migrations of these giant-sacked men, at the pinacle of humanity and virility; men who left behind the blandness and flacidity of their former lands to be among the proud, successful, and hugely well-endowed! Be proud Americans! I am proud of my huge balls.

Bunglefoot: "Good willing village people? It sounds very much like you are trying to look down on them as being bumpkins of a sort," If you suppose "sophisticated" city people are superior to village people. I'm sure they behave differently but any of them is better or worse than the other. I think.

I think Americans have little awareness of the outside world. This is not, however, unique to Americans. I don't think that people living in the middle of Russia or China spend too much time thinking about Sri Lanka, Paraguay or Guadalcanal. Are we often parochial? Certainly. Aren't most people?

If our country was once considered the melting pot country, it makes no sense for other countries think of us negatively. It's like me saying I hate Mexico, even though most of my immediate family lives there, just because of what the stereo types are. I go there, I find out, and even then, you can't make a judgment on the whole because of a few bad apples. I hate going into the slums of Chicago, but I don't hate chicago! Idiot reasoning. This is a silly post that can be easily resovled. Do not judge others, treat them as you would want to be treated. However, like many other people that live in other countries in the world, if the ones you treat with respect and truthfulness turn around and disrespects you, punch him in the nose. Next time he'll think twice!
