Russia in the EU? Never, the EU does not need Russia. The only thing Russia has to offer is oil and that's not enough. Russia in the future - who says Russia has a future? In spite of offering huge investment advantages on paper - the real investment in Russia has been very low - and that in spite of the whole western world overflowing with capital. But why invest in Russia, when you can buy bonds, that MAYBE will give you the money back. The world needs Russia as much as a boil on the bun. Russia does not need the rest of the world - they have problems enough managing themselves.

Thomas, don't sell Russia short just yet. It's not just oil. They have other resources, like timber and titanium. Titanium has dropped so much in price since Gorbachev that it is now frequently used in consumer products. The Economist reports they have had 3 good years of growth. If they can stay sober for another 3, they will be on par with other nations now looked at as EU candidates. The real problem is the fact that Russia goes all the way to Kamtchatka, which would make the EU a lot less E. In fact, they are the 5th closest country to the USA in terms of distance. Russia joining the EU would be a dangerous "cultural dilution"- they might as well add every other nation with a decent economy, thereby making the organization useless.

Russia 3rd closest to US, not 5th. Republic of the Bahamas is 5th.

>>>Titanium has dropped so much in price since Gorbachev that it is now frequently used in consumer products. During the existance of USSR we used to have titanium shovels...

CCCP: "During the existance of USSR we used to have titanium shovels..." And now you know EXACTLY why the USSR had to build the Mig-25 out of ordinary steel. All that good titanium- wasted in shovels, the primary function of which, in any centrally controlled economy, is to provide something for a resting worker to lean on. And CCCP, you know as well as I do the old Soviet Joke "We have run out of Shovels! OK, tell the men to lean on each other instead".

No kidding. So, SGTObvious, how's it going in NYC? Still in touch with your Russian-Israeli friends?

My friend "bought" a Russian woman on the Internet. When she came over, she was really meek at first - used to cook and clean - but now my friend has to buy pre-cooked food at the local Russian-Jewish store, as she won't eat anything else and the cooking and cleaning bull stopped long ago. (She's even going back to Russia for three months, with her kid. He's paying for it. He's not coming along though - not invited I guess...) Long and short - there's a very big Russian community here in the US, especially in Boston, NYC and Chicago. Lots of them are Russian Jews - not fake Jews, but real, Zionits ones. You see the old blue & white star of David more often than the Russian red, white and blue, but they all speak to each other and read & write in Russian. Plenty of that funny Russian potato cola too. Go figure

I've heard about people marrying russians as well - they always run into the spare part problem. SGObvious: The fact is russia is big enough to form a closed economy - so the need for the EU is not there. The future will be Russia closed off from the outside world - bit of trade going on; but not much else - a few internal wars. The world does not need Russia and Russia does not need the world.

It must be a problem, as fewer and fewer Russians are marryign Russians and the birth rate has dropped to one of the lowest in Europe, far below replacement rate, and the population is declining by about .3% a year. Naturally, the biggest decline is in Slavic "Russian" Russians. So, whatever the future will be for Russians, it is clear there will be fewer Russians in the future.

>>>>The world does not need Russia and Russia does not need the world. You know, thomas, if it is so, then who will buy solid-gold cell phones that cost $100K? Who will buy tickets to your *Back in USSR* tours that cost from $1000 to $10000 (notable: you can't sell them as fast and as expensive anywhere in the world except...wrong...not Russia....Moscow)? Who will buy computers that cost over $200K with brilliants all over them? Who will buy the most expensive houses around the world? And why corporations like DaimlerChrysler (particularly Mercedes-Benz wing) considering Russian market as the most perspective? See, your point of view is not shared by many. Even by your European buddies...
