It is not surprising that most of the other systems remain secrets.

One wonders whether it even would be both possible and prudent to, well in advance, forward position subsurface residing quasi-autonomous short range or intermediate range nuclear missiles. And if so, what would be the effective countermeasures to these.

I wonder if they have UUVs out there that will mimic the sound signatures of our subs at appropriate times. Probably.

>>> One wonders whether it even would be both possible and prudent to, well in advance, forward position subsurface residing quasi-autonomous short range or intermediate range nuclear missiles. And if so, what would be the effective countermeasures to these. The problem is physical. The pressure of the water column plus the corrosiveness of seawater makes the dropping of payloads containing rocket motors and sensitive electronics for long duration presence problematic and difficult, else the Russians would have tried that trick (did try that trick and failed). >>> I wonder if they have UUVs out there that will mimic the sound signatures of our subs at appropriate times. Probably. >>> Only if they were stupid. You don't want to hand an enemy a complete acoustics library in peacetime, especially if he is no good at assembling one that he can use for track and engage underwater.

How about rather than mimicking a 688 or Virginia...we emit, if possible, the LF noise that sounds LIKE an SSN...see if any PRC vessels "turn up" hunting....might give us a clue as to how well they can "hear" & track targets...

If we emit & emit & no one shows it might indicate that they are deaf or that we aren't fooling them...but if they do, well it begins to let us know their threshold for detection, NO?

Or am I being too clever, by half?

Don't know if their level of sophistication can be tested that way. Usually the only way you know if an enemy has your sound signature is to sneak up on him from astern and listen to see if he turns back on you to catch you on his flank or nose array. A robot can't do that. Too limited.

Two problems:
--> a tethered robot is restricted by length of cable as to speed, data transmission rate, operating  autonomy, and maneuverability, plus there is something called trackback which allows a home on signal impact (HOSI) weapon to drive past the detected drone and search for the launcher.

As you all know the LCS and its off-board modules have been hotly debated here. The news over the last few months was how the LCS modules could be deployed not just from the it but also from other vessels. And here we are seeing a specialized version of them being used in submarines. The off-board vehicle is a natural response to the ever increasing danger of operating in littoral waters or along well known shipping routes. And do not forget that the submarine itself can be an "off-board" vehicle that deploys other "off-board" vehicles. I am particularly pleased with Keffler's apparent lack of hostility to the concept... now that submarines are also doing it.
