Subject: French vs UK Subs
human7    8/22/2004 5:37:44 PM
How do Sub Fleets of these two nations compare? Which fleet is more technologically advanced? What are some capabilities found in one Fleet but not the other?

I can answer: UK subs and training is very good.I can say you that the UK subs have an unique terrain following suit to follow ground in shallow water US doesn't even have. The French subs have an advantage to be able to work on battery as they are nuclear electric with a core which can be cooled by natural convection. So you can stop the reactor and the French subs is supersilent and difficult to detect as a modern dieselectric. Commander capacity would made the difference in average but French crew are well trained as British. So very difficult. (Some people are saying that French subs are not as silent: true with the Rubis class but all our subs are on Amethiste class now)

And the UK have 12 (and 8 in the future) SSN vs 6 for France (minimum level).

I have long had an interest in submarines in general, and nuclear submarines in particular. [I seek data on the proposal by RN to build an SSN in 1943 if anyone has any. This might be the very first serious proposal - depending on when it happened - one other nation initiated SSN work in 1943]. As a person with some technical knowledge of modern submarines, I think it is clear: quiet matters. The French therefore have a better idea. We thought about this approach, but for some reason abandoned it.
