This appears to be the second Type 94 locatred in a dry dock at Quingdao - the other sub spotted by FAS is up by Dalian and she is docked.
You can clearly see from the sat. image that the 94 is equipped with 12 missile tubes aft of the conning tower. The boat appears to have a X rudder configuration and it does have a hull section open at what appears to be the reactor area just aft of the missile tubes. In the nortwest corner of the of the dry dock area are 10 large canisters. They appear to be the right size for the JL-2 missiles.

Sorry that should be NORTHEAST corner of the dry dock for the possible JL-2 canisters.

Looks like I spotted the older Xia class sub at Qingdao....
LINK
Two satellite images are now available (see figure below) that clearly show two missile submarines with different dimensions. One image from 2005 shows what is believed to be the Xia-class (Type 092) SSBN in drydock at the Jianggezhuang Submarine Base approximately 14 miles east of Qingdao. The submarine is approximately 390 feet (120 meters) long of which the missile compartment makes up roughly 80 feet (25 meters). Twelve missile launch tubes are clearly visible.
The second image from late 2006 shows what appears to be the new Jin-class (Type 094) SSBN moored at the Xiaopingdao Submarine Base south of Dalian, approximately 193 miles north of Qingdao. The Jin-class appears to be approximately 35 feet (10 meters) longer than the Xia-class SSBN, primarily due to an extended mid-section of approximately 115 feet (35 meters) that houses the missile launch tubes and part of the reactor compartment.

What is the advantage/disadvantage of an "X" configuration of a sub's tail fins versus a "+"

Not sure about the advantages of a X configuration - I will have to defer to those who are better at hydrodynamics but my guess is the wake vortices caused by the large "sail" or conning tower may cause turbulance over a vertical fin structure while an X configuration will have the control fins outside of the vortice wake.

It must look rather like a traffic jam underwater.
What with the Chinese submarine leading the Japanese submarine, leading the American submarine, leading the British submarine.....

Today's Strat page story on the new Russian boomer will add to this international underwater orgy. The Russians are going to base their new boomers in the Pacific.
Gee... I wonder why the Russians might consider it better to run these new SLBM armed subs nearer to the PRC than the USA?
