Subject: virginia class vs astute class
bluedogzoo    5/30/2007 3:23:25 PM
The astute is about to be launched and I have heard lots of media reports quoting british officials that the submarine would be the quietest and most capable in the world. Anyone have thoughts how this sub will compare to the american virginia class in terms of capabilities... ie max speed, depth, acoustic etc??? Obviously all this stuff is classified but hey...its always fun to discuss and debate :)

They are probably close enough in performance that it will come down to the crew and commanders in a straight up fight.

I wish I could be there.

And the RN knows a few combat tricks that the USN hasn't quite mastered yet. The RN's big hangup is basic engineering and materials quality control in the sub, itself. The Virginia might have a slight edge there; be more damage resistant and able to recover from a mechanical casualty more easily than an Astute.

Rocky has it about right, though.

Comes down to the better crew.
