Subject: Minelaying UUV?
Herald1234    1/23/2007 5:27:25 PM
I know that mineclearing UUVs are in the inventories of various navies, but has anybody thought about a MINELAYER? There are hudreds of bottom mines laying around in the inventories of the world's navies. It just occurred to me that a "minelayer sled" that could be submarine piggybacked and then sent in to plug heavily a defended chokepoint might be possible.

Call it one of my lunatic ideas.

I'd give it a 2 thumbs up.  Its rather like sending a cruise missile. Get at close as you safely can, then send the UUV to go lay mines. Perhaps its disposable and you get the heck out of dodge while its laying them.  Sounds great for Littoral missions they keep talking about.

How about modifying your mine-laying UUV so that the sub drops it off, and it waits for some period of time after the sub leaves before proceeding to its mission to help assure the safe getaway of the sub?

Maybe
