Subject: Akula acoustic signature versus LA class
Adamantine    1/22/2005 2:54:25 AM

Some sources quoted Akula II to be as quiet as 110 decibel. While other credicted Akula II to be 115 decibels.

Nobody know how quiet the old LA and new LA class are. Open literature indicate that 688I is 7 to 10 times quieter than the original LA class.

If the original LA class is 120 decibel, then 688I would be about 110 to 113 deceibel (DB).

But if the 688 I is 105 DB, then the origial LA class would be 112 to 115 DB.

Such large variation in estimation make in difficult to say for sure whether LA class or akula class is better.

It should be noted that Akula II may be significantly quieter than Akuka I. Maybe 5 db quieter.

On the other hand, we have no idea of the real speed and reactor power of LA class because the real performance is secret. neither can we be sure of the exact diving depth of La class or Akula class.

No one can say for sure whether Akula uses HY80 steel or HY 100 steel or HY 120 steel.

And no one can be sure whether Akula II is fitted with a longer range and more accurate version of SKVALL supercavitating torpedo.

In some engagement scenario, LA may have fired the MK48 torpedo first but the SKVALL may end up destroying LA class first although it is fired 1-2 min later than a MK-48.

We also must know what is the ability of the Akula to detect LA class using ACTIVE sonar.

Let say a LA class stealthily detect a slow moving Akula II 15 km away . the LA class launches 2 MK-48 at slow speed setting. After the MK48 has travelled for 5 km, the Akula detected the MK48. It quickly launches decoy and countermeasures WHILE using its ACTIVE sonar to locate LA class. After which it will launch 2 to 4 SKVALL 2 in revenge.

There is a possibility that in such a scenario, both submarine will be destroyed.

But no one can tell unless you know the exact performance of the active and passive sonar of Akula 2 and how good the SKVALL is.

There is too many uncertainty to tell for sure.
