Subject: Different AIP's different characteristics
Iano    1/9/2005 7:17:04 AM
Does anyone know about the different characteristics of air independent propulsions systems? I never knew there was more than one, I only heard of the Swedes using the Stirling engine!

Sweden (Gotland Class): Stirling-cycle heat engines with external combustion
France (Agosta 90B Class, Scorpene Class): Closed-cycle steam turbines
Germany (U212 and U214): Hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells

What are the advantages/disadvantages of each?

Also does anyone have any idea what the Chinese were using in the "Ming" class (old U boat copy) that killed 70 sailors at their stations? That was rumoured to be testing AIP I hear?

Thanks
Ian

Don't know about the Ming but I'd bet the Yuan class is pretty much French with a possible fuel cell system.
