Subject: Who would win in a war between Greece and Bulgaria??????
Italyguy    1/20/2003 1:56:59 PM
Well I am not sure who would win but I would say Greece would win because of better modernised forces and numerical. On the other hand Bulgaria has fiercly proud people who woul not give up so easily.... Besides Bulgaria is about to join NATO by the way... Also geography might favor Bulgaria or Greece depending on the attacker. So what do you think??? Please state you reasons!!!!

I don't know, but Bulgaria has strong artillery (until now even SS-23 with 600 km range) with more than 218 MLRS, over 600 SP-Horwizers (2S1), 203 D-20 (152mm), 72 M-46 (130mm) and some older but capable M-30 (122mm)in storage. Beside there is a huge amount of ammo. On the other hand we have more than 400 T-72M1 tanks and some T-55AM2 as reserve and over 1700 APC/ IFV. This means that our army is well mechanized. Most of the weapons are new (that means produced years ago but never used). Our air force is poor now but we have still more than 43 Mi-24 hing gunship helicopters, 25 Mi-17 - which can be also used as air support. And we have better air defense (10 S-300P, 20 SA-6b, 24 SA-8b, 27 Shilka SPAAG, not talking about older SA-3/ SA-4/ SA-5 that is to be scrapped and more than 350 ZU-23M). I heared that there will be Buk-1M SAM or some newer S-300PMU-1 SAM will be bought instead. Currently we're introducing most modern C4 equipment, we modernize more of half of our T-72M1 tanks to M2 standard, 5.56mm AR-M1 assault rifles and 9x19 Arcus-98 pistols are to be introduced, new radar systems, naval vessles and helicopters are also to be bought. I think at least we are equal in fire power.

One would hope they'd both simply sink beneath the waves never to be seen again, frankly.

Bulgaria's main weakness is air force but we have strong artillary and well armed armoured corps (as opposed to Greece). Also we have a Russian-type mentality and resistance, so Greece will be hard pressed to win

What have they ever done to me? Fought against my country in WW1. Run a highly unpleasant secret police and foreign assassination network out of all proportion with it's size during the Cold War and now operate armed forces which have a reputation in UN peacekeeping circles as being endemically corrupt. Hopefully NATO membership will straighten them out.

Actually, I don't have anything really against Bulgaria, I have to say. I do, however, I'm ashamed to say, have a largely irrational but pretty comprehensive and borderline psychotic prejudice against the Greeks. Or at least Greek politics. I make a point of never talking politics with Greek people because in my experience around 80% of them are insufferably gittish and massively bigoted. If you don't talk politics they tend to be ok, but then pretty much anybody is ok if you don't talk politics...

Valid point there. Corrupt military-well, the end of Cold WAr had that efeect on every one in EAstern Europe. I do admit that the state security was probably nastier than the KGB, but WW1 was a long time ago! By the way, r u French? Or british? BEcaus BUlgaria inflicted Britain's biggest defeat in modern warfare.

"Bulgaria inflicted Britain's biggest defeat in modern warfare"? Uh-huh, yeah. I presume you mean the Salonika Campaign? Maybe that's what they teach them in Bulgarian High School Patriotic National Myths 101. Two understrength British Corps with no resupply (to the extent that they were almost entirely reliant on volunteer medical aid) committed to a French-led campaign to support an already beaten Serbian Army against the entire German-backed Bulgarian Army on it's home turf. It was hardly Isandlhwana. Hell, MALARIA landed the gut punches in that campaign, not the Bulgarians.

If i had to choose well... if greece is attacking the bulgarians would win, if the bulgarians are attacking the greeks would be defeated oonly to come back somewhere in the mainland but neither 1 can conquare each other fully.

You can not compare the military forces of the 2 countries. Greece would won a war but Greece and Bulgaria will never go to war each other because we got a common enemy ?turkey ?. In 1987 when Greece and turkey was about to fight the Greek foreign minister visit Bulgaria and after that all the Bulgaria army deployed at the Bulgarian ? Turkish borders. That made turkey to relax and the war did not happen. So you can not think that kind of scenarios. Greece and Bulgaria are good friends now and they will not ever fight each other
