Subject: Why both the CV90 IFV and the MOWAG Piranha?
Schackleford    9/2/2006 7:58:55 AM
For starters, don't get me wrong. I think it is great that we finally, some 20 or 30 years behind everybody else, gets IFV's and are ready to offer our troops some mobile protection and fire support. But why introduce a entirely new platform for just this one job? We already have Piranha's configured as Armored Personnel Carriers and Medevac. Why not simply purchase a Piranha variant with an 25 mm auto-cannon turret? Such a system would have many parts inter-changeable with our other Piranha's and it would probably also be easier to train drivers who are already familiar with the vehicle.

The army is still in a transitional faze.

The Cold war army was typically armoured infantry - all of it - to all intends and purposes.

The army is now being formed with light, medium and heavy troops.

The spare parts argument is in there somewhere; but there is also the consideration of not putting all your eggs in one basket.

But I don't know the actual considerations that form the basis of the decision.

The CV9035 Mk III is in an entirely different league wrt mobility, protection and firepower from a Piranha with 25mm autocannon.

The CV90 can keep up with the Leo 2A5 as they go offroad and is intended for a higher intensity of conflict. They are more expensive, though.

The Piranha IIIC and -H are excellent for peacekeeping or patrolling as they are fast on roads and some offroad terrain, they're cheap, upkeep is less than an IFV, less maintenace etc. So a good vehicle for Iraq or Kosovo. The Swedes use the CV90 for peacekeeping in places like Africa where the road network sucks.

It is a hourses for courses thing, that depend on the task. CV90 + Piranha is a very fine combination.

CV90 is a capable Infantry Fighting Vehicle, while a Pirannah is an Armoured Personel Carrier, 25mm cannon or whatever it may be packing. There is a lot more to an IFV than the cannon.

Forgot to add. The Danish Materiel Command will procure 10 armoured recce vehicles. most likely it will be these.

And also 70 light recce vehicles. Perhaps these.

Yes, I am.
One question though. I can recognize the above vehicle, the Piranha (it has its name written on it, after all) but what is the bottom vehicle?

It looks like a Fennek, but I am not sure.

However, I just realised that the light armoured recce vehicles have already been ordered - it's the 85 Eagle IV's of course. My bad.

I think the 10 heavy recce vehicles are still on.
