Subject: State of the Armed Forces of Freedonia
swhitebull    8/14/2003 1:51:41 PM
Background - As most people on this board know, Freedonia is the last known truly Marxist country left in Europe, resisting most vigorously the rest of Eastern Europe?s attempts to throw off the shackles of Communist oppression. It is a tiny country, nestled almost unnoticed by the rest of the world in the northernmost regions of the Balkans, abutting the free state of Sylvania, the hereditary principality of Graustark, the grand Duchy of Fenwick, and the formerly ?democratic? regime of Ruritania, which has also gone back to its traditional constitutional monarchy following the collapse of the Soviet Union, which had entered the countries in 1945 in order to ?protect? them from invasion from the American forces then entering Germany. Freedonia has been at war with its 4 neighbors for almost 2 centuries, due to differences in dialect (these 5 countries share a common language and culture, but differ in the inflection and use of certain words), traditions and territorial ambitions. Part of Freedonia?s problem with its neighbors is that it has frequently devolved into chaos and civil war, with the traditional triumvirate of leaders (constitutionally mandated in this Marxist state) at odds with each other, resulting in frequent coups to be the chief ruler among the rulers, assassinations, etc.. And while this IS a Marxist state, where each according to his own, and each according to his own ability, the traditional leadership seems to have endured from a long line of Marxist families, who can trace their ancestry to a common family 300 years ago or so. And when the chaos gets to much at home and the Triumvirate is unable to effectively run their nation, it sometimes crosses its borders to attack its 3 neighbors. The only tidbit I could gather was that 200 years ago, BEFORE the Marxist revolution swept Central Europe, especially in 1848 or so, the position of the Grand Marshall of Freedonia was traditionally held by the Royal Bastard. Of course, that position has been abolished since the Soviets invaded, but I?ve heard rumors of the position being re-established. Since this is the Balkans, there hasn?t been much that the Western nations have been able to do to control these border incursions by Freedonia, or to impose some measure of stability on Freedonia. In fact, the NATO countries have been too involved to pay much attention to these countries, except usually once a year around the New Year, when NATO holds its annual meetings to discuss the current situation in the Balkans. Here?s my question - I?m pretty good at research, but have been unable to find much on the military forces, capabiliities of Freedonia and their neighbors of Graustark, Ruritania, and Sylvania, and Fenwick. They DO maintain a presence in the United States, with representatives popping up occasionally on the late-nite talk shows. Can anyone help me dig some info up? I will post this on the Balkans board as well. Thanks - swhitebull
