General Claims US Troops Ill Equipped The problem, it seems, is that our troops are too well armed. They should be using lighter weapons, so as not cause civilian casualties.

Wow, I don't think I read so much utter BS in a while. WTF are "precision-guided pistols" and how are you supposed to hit anything with a pistol (precision guided or not) while in a moving vehichle? If troops are using "unauthorized" levels of force - that's a training and discipline issues, not an equipment issue. There is another thing that you would think a General would be aware of.. the extremely limited range of a pistol. If your convoy is attacked by a suicide bomber or car packed with explosives, it's maybe best to be able to stop them before they get to within "accurate" and "effective" pistol range. **sigh** Hopefully the next article will be "former" US General..

I ask myself, can he really be that stupid? I should not be surprised to learn that this was simply a CYA memo, including a suggested fix never meant to be implemented, meant to keep someone out of trouble in the future if the "dispraportionate force" idea becomes a hot media topic. I for one would much rather that this be ass-covering than a case of a dumb general.
