I know that it is a combination of wishful thinking, myopia and misunderstanding on my part; but the apparent reality of Muslim fanatics killing each other over tribal, personal and unfathomable(to me) variations of Islam seems to be the only way to stop these 'people'. I have made a tiny effort to decipher Islamic sects (Shi'a, Sunni, Sufism, etc), but I am afraid that Catholic school training, including five years in Seminary school plus a year of Jesuit college has rendered my religious tolerance to zero.
I think I understand the concept that the first generations of followers of Mohammed were controlled by sons, grandsons, sons-in-law, etc. These Mohammed relatives were concerned primarily with and very successful at killing each other(and millions of non-believers) for money, power and holy truth. This is a very Christian concept and European history is bloodied by 1800 years of examples. Overly simplistic but 'Christians' have pretty much stopped exterminating each other in the name(excuse) of their common religion.

In the last decade the US government (we can also thank the blind hatred that some media has for anything American) seems to have learned that the only popular, not to mention effective, way to battle Islamic fanatics is to allow them small arms and turn them loose on each other.

To repeat, I know that I must be missing something due to my inherent 'bias'. No, let's be honest, due to my rabid hatred of Islamic fanatics and the threat they pose to not just civilization, but life itself. We are all just patiently waiting for the inevitable. There is little doubt that Pakistan and next Iran will eventually use nuclear weapons. Hopefully against each other, but I am a optimist. Should this MAD event occur, the good news is that either or both of these countries will cease to exist, as military entities at least. The 'bad' news is essentially infinite. We have fifty years of both fact and media hysteria about the USSR, if you need research.

In the meantime, there is nothing that the US can do militarily to 'help' these rabid psychotics. Send them food and medicine, if they stop killing the doctors. Allow them nothing that can be used as a weapon against America - Nothing!

There is a wide spread misconception in the western world about "what" the islamic world wants. EG Syrian fighters (not civilians) have been indoctinated for decades how bad the west is so most syrians do NOT prefer western life style over Rule of Assad and Rule of Religious Hardliners. As usual, trueth comes after knowledge.

Reminds me of the bugs bunny episode where Elmer says "sure I get beat every day and eat garbage but I was told this is the best possible live people can have".

At least you`re honest in your ignorance, bigotry and prejudice, tho` it is kind of ironic that those years of religious schooling did not apparently teach you any of the christian virtues
If you want better relations with the islamic world then the first thing you need to do is stop lecturing it about democracy while at the same time propping up the corrupt and despotic arab regimes like the house of saud, ironically these are also the same people who are exporting those head chopping wahabist terrorists all over the place.I know this might be hard to understand but not every muslim is a wahabist, hell not even every sunni is a wahabist just like not every christian is a branch davidian or children of god member or every catholic priest a paedophile

My apologies to 'Flames'. I was trained and indoctrinated by fanatic Catholics(Christians). No matter how many Hospitals and charities Christians build, the bottom line is that Christianity, like Judaism and Islam, is based on unending, bizarre and unnecessary lies. My point was that I am NOT a christian, by means of extensive un-training. The Romans had a society, at least as beneficial as Europe circa 400-1825AD, and certainly more positive than any Islamic culture, without the rabid horror of religious fanaticism. I do not think I have ever seen or even read about a 'democracy' on this planet. I certainly did not bring up such a sci-fi term in my futile comment.

One additional waste of our time. Islamic religious populations arose among the survivors of jihad massacre converted at the point of sword. Sounds like early Christianity....If a Muslim cult rose to conquer, let's say Europe, after first executing 50%+/- of the entire population, the vast majority of survivors would convert, at least publicly. That is called 'common sense'. If these same hypothetical jihadist fanatics take over, the vast majority of Muslim 'faithful' will support such an event. Support would be the only way to survive, not mention the economic superiority and social control over the non-believers or even the less fanatic.

Religious control over political and military forces is 'insane' - definition attributed, inter alia, to Albert Einstein: "Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result". This 'explanation' is as useless as it unresolvable. The saddest part of a group like 'al-qaeda' (chose your spelling and rabid sub-cult) lies in their glaring and totally wrong belief that their fanatic belief system will protect them from American power. Christians like to preach, forgive and forget. The American military has a different agenda, 'Never forgive, never forget'.

Peace Love and Revolution
Not necessarily in that order
