Subject: Why Do They Bother?
displacedjim    6/19/2007 11:20:08 AM
Kommersant of Russia is reporting that Russia will be selling Syria at least five (for starters?) MiG-31E and an undisclosed number of MiG-29M in a deal estimated to be worth $1billion. The five FOXHOUND are reconditioned from Russian stocks (the production line closed over a decade ago), but those MiG-29M are the latest version of the FULCRUM and would be new aircraft. I really am surprised that Syria would waste their money this way. Obviously if we go in, we'll sweep the skies no matter what they buy and I'm sure they know that. I'm sure this buy is aimed more at making some sort of statement to Israel. When will it get through to them that a few dozen modern aircraft won't change squat against even "just" the Israeli air force? Idiots.

And the Taleban and Hezbullah have shown that USA USSR & Israel CAN be beaten. Blame the politicians on our side for showing weakness.

What do big, expensive Russian fighter jets - technological elements wedded to 3rd generation warfighting - have to do with a 4th generation fight?

Especially since neither the Taliban nor the Hizballah have beaten America.

The Taleban have withheld USA--check the threads in the US board, its old news but true. They haven't won, but

More on this from the Chermans....
Yup, it looks as if the bad old USSR is back in the Middle-East supporting the bad guys. There should be a way to make them pay for this, as well as for their murderous radioactive rampage in the UK.

The Mig-31 can act as a sort of AWACS with 1980s tech for the Syrian airforce or go after Israeli AWACS. Other then that I dont see what 5 aircraft will do. Mig-31s were Built to patrol large unprotected USSR airspace. hardly Syrias problem. Wonder why they want these over Sukhois

Five modern -31s can influence the jamming environment in a big way.  They can hang back flying zig zags and share their data and locks with ground and other airborne resources via fast links in relative immunity.  Smart move especially for the Russian aircraft industry.

Syrian airspace is too small to effectively use the MiG 31 in an effort to engage Eagles.

1. Somebody, [HtJ], seriously suggested that the MiG 31 was upgraded with PRC electronics? ROTFLMAO
2. As usual,  Shirrush makes me consider myself to be a Captain Obvious by pointing out that the Syrian MiGs will be
actually IRIAF aircraft based either in  Iran eventually or flown  by Iranians inside a stooge regime's airspace.
3. The Mig 29 even at this late date continues to be one of the most overhyped underperforming aircraft ever fielded as  aginst the claims made for it.
4. The MiG 31 has a formidable radar but nobody to this date has ever shown me that its telemetry data link was that good or that it didn't need good AWACs support itself to maintain battlespace awareness in a countermeasures environment.

Besides as a maneuveing  aircraft the MiG 31 wallows like a  pig at altitude.  Nor does it have a BVR  advantage against  ANY  US fighter with its Russian missiles or any Israeli fighter armed with current US or Israeli A2A missiles. WVR it is hopeless.

It also has no potential energy or thrust to mass advantage over the aircraft that will splash it  or bomb it on the runway. Eagles were specifically designed to kill these aircraft and have done so-routinely.

I have to agree with DJ. Why would Syria waste the money? Sukhois are better all around.

you just demonstrated again that you have no clue, HtJ?

Well since pointing out the obvious to you is a waste of time, just keep racking up the evidence of your mental in-acumen, HtJ.

Consider what Herald has listed.  Given this you would tend to order more than five if you planned to use them for launch platforms as designed.  However mere five can loiter at high altitude/low speed zig zagging in two-pairs with one refueling either aerial or on the ground at any given time and cover Syria/Lebanon ingress.  Once refueled, fifth aircraft sprints to swap tracks with another and so on giving sustained presence.  Being high-altitude aerial, and assuming Russian showpiece treatment with best in class processors on such a huge frame, gigantic radome space, and applying Russian/Indian best expertise on telemetry all to stimulate aircraft sales -- you could have super nimble distributed AWACs equivalent for regional purposes if the Russians committed a few years ago.  These -31s will be equipped with drop tanks but no missiles I predict and they will police Syrian airspace, not Iranian.

I still reckon they will be used as a recce platform, to probe Israeli airspace with sensors.

Doubt they will be much good at it, but I think the Syrians are directly thinking back to the Mig 25's they operated in such a role.

Just to add, let us remember that Syria does have Mig 25's, while I very much doubt they are still serviceable - while the Mig 31's could simply be a direct replacement to keep current capabilities.
