Subject: Saudi Missile Site

link Interesting ... I didn't know the Saudis had that kind of capability. Nothing the U.S. couldn't dismantle in a day if necessary, but apparently the Saudis are serious about having some capabilities left after they ask us to leave. On a different note, could Saudi Arabia repel an attack from Iraq if we weren't there? I know that will probably never come to pass, but it's something I've always wondered about. --Phoenix Rising

Sorry Phoenix but long range missles don't make a strong military. The cash and manpower would be better spent on better training, efficient command and control, and modern equipment. So far they only have modern equipment. They might be able to defeat or hold off a weakend Iraq but not a revitalised Iran. The only reason they haven't asked us to leave already is that they know how inviting all that oil looks to foriegn dictators. It's already been tried once recently.

Interestingly there was a story circulating that after being charged extreemly high maintanance for the RSAF (royal saudi air force), the Saudi's demanded action, and when this was refused demanded the removal of all BAe personel, BAe insisted this was a bad idea and suggested maybe a month or so trial. Needless to say within 1 week 1/2 the frontline aircraft were unservicable. It is well understood that the RSAF is actually run by westerners!

Well the missiles are Silkworms from China (another great acquisition - for kickbacks I'm sure). They are not being maintained, no one ever was trained to use them, and they most certainly pose an evironmental hazard. But such a hazard would be miniscule to the overall environmental nightmare that Saudi Arabia has. My guess is that all the dumping of God-knows what ( hazardous waste from petroleum refineries/chemical factories, etc.) all over the kingdom is the root cause for the Gulf War syndrome that many of our veterans are strickened with.
