Subject: royal family good for SA?
gcw1995    6/4/2005 2:58:51 PM
Lets say if the Saudi royal family was'nt in power. Some extreme islamic political group or dictator was in powerin the future, what would Saudi Arabia be like? Would it be another Iraq or Syria? Would terrorists flourish more? Other opinions welcome.

Dictator, or Royal family, almost the same thing really, Fahd is ona ventilator at the moment, so no long before Abdullah comes in. I think he will be better for the country, though how much the sidari's will let him play around is something we will wait to see!

The Royal Family is constantly skirting a line between cooperating with the USA and with terrorists. Personally if anyone in the Kingdom needs to get interrogated for some hardcore information on terrorist funding, the ENTIRE Royal Family would be a good place to start. Seeing as how SA is the big exporter of Radical Fundamentalists you might wanna figure there is a fire with so much smoke billowing out from behind the oil they are using to hide behind.

Psudonym, have you ever lived there? I did for 12 years and can tell you that the Royal Family is like any other extended group anywhere. How many American Muslims support Al-Q? Now, I am not really trying to defend the Royal Family. Some of them certainly support Al-Q and the Wahabis. Some are cooperative not because they believe Al-Q and the Wahabis are right, but because they must be tolerated to maintain power. Some are downright opposed to Al-Q, and have taken action. Right now at least, the Royal Family are our best bet for keeping a lid on things and keeping the oil flowing. But remember, they are not Americans and do have their own interests.

Their culture allows the perversion of their faith to continue, they are not our friends. Other places to explore for oil. Alaska comes to mind, but if Enviro's are too testy the Gov't could subsidize Siberian oil expeditions. We sit with the country that exports most of the Wahabism and do nothing while attacking Iraq who has very little significance on the Terrorist scene. What message are we Really sending the terrorists... Not saying we should have tanks rumbling through Mecca, but we shouldn't sit back and say they can act like Barbarians as long as the oil continues flowing. Now that we have Iraq anyway, we have another source, though somewhat dangerous. Sooner or later the Saudi style of life must change, we need to secure an alternative to the OPEC nations and cut off their money supply. Once they start emptying their bank accounts we will see how much money they have to send their schools around the middle east spouting hate, and recruiting martyrs.

The point I was trying to make is that our best bet is the Royal Family, at least for now. We can get oil in a lot of places, but the cost will be a lot higher than what we are paying now. Add to that the price is going up because of greater demand from our trading partners, the Chinese. I agree wholeheartedly that something must change. Our best hope for an agent of change is the younger generation of the Royal Family, who are more reform minded. We should be working with them if we want a change.
