Subject: Friend or Foe?
Robert996@excite.com    12/1/2001 1:06:47 AM
How much longer do you think the US will consider S.A. a friend? They certainly have not been acting much like an ally lately (ie funding terrorism(indirectly, but money is money), not cooperating in cutting off terrorist assets, refusing to allow US Strike aircraft to use their airspace, etc. etc.).

I think its interesting that you differentiate between voluntary and extortionate funds. To me there is very little difference. The Saudis have a responsibility to deny funds to terrorists. Even if it meant that they would come under terrorists attacks by extremists. They have a responsibility not to feed that particular animal. Appeasement never works. If you don't believe me I can site many, MANY examples. As far as I can ascertain, the Saudis have not done anything of any significance to help us fight the war on terror and have actually hamstrung us over some requests. Most terrorism is directly or indirectly Saudi Arabian in origin.

The difference between voluntary and involuntary is manifest. If the infastructure is not in place to protect the individual from involuntary extortion then you should condemn the government and not the individual that places his families lives above principle. Those that give willingly to an immoral cause are usually ignorant. Those who are coerced are generally very well aware of the consequences.

Pfd, you are applying our values to another nation, many of the Saudis are well aware of where their money is going, and actively support the action of the terror groups. In their view the terrorism is not immoral, but justified actions of great heroes. They hate the United States and what we stand for, and no amount of education will change that.

These are universal feelings. Humanity and all that baggage. I think you just want to give a laser beam focus on your opinions yet are diffusing the origional statement. There are very grey areas in the world. En facine they may come to specific ends but in origin they point to vastly different problems. A millionare being shook down in Saudi IS different than a group of drunks in Boston coughing up cash for the cause so they can show up again at the same bar next Saturday night. As to the last-was a witness.

I suggest the rotyal family be taken out by force and a Mulitnatianl Islamic army placed in charge of the Holy sites. The rest of Arabia... wabahism should be uprooted and destroyed.

Pakistani, I tend to agree about Wahabism being the source of many of the problems from Islamic fundamentalists, but as a muslim yourself, how do you think America could go after Wahabism, and the Saudi royal family without looking like we are attacking the heart of the Islamic faith? Do you think it could be possible that perhaps a uprising within Saudi Arabia could result in this positive outcome?

Perhaps this is a blind spot of mine but I am amazed that any sect/branch/cult can have such a defining power on one's views. Irrespective of the specifics of God views-this is almost the inverse of the problem. The void that is being filled by religeon seems to be a political-economic one. In the West folks seem to find religeon after the glut of choice. Here it seems that religeon provides the 'answers' for a group that hasn't the stones to fight for what they really want. Sad to say the right of free speech and representative government is low on the list. I get the overwhelming impression thats it is one of cash and sex in the next world. I am quite ignorant of the major as well as the fine points of the culture but this is the overwhelming take that I have recieved up to date. I beg for enlightenment.

Robert, Very early in the war on terrorism I posted a book report on a booked titled "Islamic Fundalmentalism". I am sorry I forget the author's name at the momemt. It confirms the point that you are making the Islamic Fundalmentalism arises from bad governance. I recommend it as a quick read. Also Daniel Pipes reports on his web sites are good information. Then go the National Review Online for Victor Hanson for other information. One point I would make is that for a muslim they reject the notion of the separation of church and state. They are holistic in their religious application. By and large most muslims are easygoing observants. External factors drive some to fanaticism including governments using them as proxies first on Israel then the U.S. I believe that in the end the United States and Saudi Arabia are going to have to have a showdown with Wahabism. There are strains in the Royal Family between supporting modernism and wahabism. Indications are that most of the royals would support modernism (per articles in the BBC and Guardian newpaper). In Saudi Arabia people were killed when TV was introduced. One good thing about this war is that countries are going to have to chose sides and they don't like it. It is far too soon to see how this plays out.

" Yes robert I think that an uprising could do the job but the problem is what kind of elemets will get their hands on the throne after the dust settles? I agree that it could seem like an attack on Islam unless done very carefully but it must be done if we are to get serious abotu terrorism. "We have to get the head of the snake". There is no love loss between Iran and Saudia arabia. That may be an option but then Isreal would have a problem on her hands. A staged uprising by Pakistnis on Arab soil is possiable because about 60% of the troops in the Saudi royal Army are Pakistani nationals. However they are all Wahabbished and it would take a lot to get them to stage a coup. I really dont know what to say asdie from IT MUST BE DONE.
