Subject: AS90? Much cop?
owain    4/30/2004 5:51:35 AM
Last night I came across an old home movie that I had taken in the 'firepower display' in 1996. I'd forgotten about it and enjoyed remembering watching the AS90 pounding the distant targets. I was wondering wether the AS90 was any good as a modern Arty piece or wether it needs to be updated?

Your opinions please

The AS90 is a great piece of kit - tried and tested, better than the M109A6 and more affordable than the Pz2000. The Latest variant with the 52 cal barrel replacing the original 39 cal has made it one of the premier SP arty platforms in the world. If it keeps getting software and ammo upgrades, it'll be around for quite a while. Pucka

Interesting that AS90 has been around barely more than a decade, making it one of the newest systems on the market and questions are already being raised as to whether or not it is "any good as a modern artillery piece" and needs to be updated.

I was just asking as a matter of interest. I saw them nearly 10 years ago and was wondering wether or not some mew system or upgrade was bettering the AS90. Thats all. Sh*t! Sometime I think why do I bother!

The 52 cal barrel and new extended range ammo increase the range from 28km to 40km. The GPS and automatic gun laying make it very accurate and easy to coordinate as a six-gun battery. The rapid burst facility of 3 rounds per 10 seconds is still unbeaten and, because it was designed without the need for a rear earth anchor, gives it top-rated shoot n scoot times. e.g. On the move at 25mph; from braking-stopping-laying-firing to moving out again, a battery can get 18 shells away in about 30 seconds of which 15 seconds are static. Repeat as necessary.

The AS90 is the replacement for the Abbot 105 SP Arty. The Abbot was very reliable and repected in its time, thus it being in service for more than 30 years. As I said before, the AS90 is a tried and tested modern platform that is up there with the best, whatever that is - Pz2000, 2S19, etc. Pucka

Abbot was 105mm in armored light regiments; Brits used M-109 155mm in armored medium arty as well; think you will find Brit M-109s 155mm were replaced by AS-90 155mm.

True, Worcester I forgot that the M109 was used by most of NATO. Still, the Abbot was a great little SP arty piece in its day. Pucka

I think the AS90 is the best SPH in 155mm. A re-barreled 2S19 would be better IMO, because it shares most of the AS90's rapid fire characteristics (e.g. not having to "dig in") with the exception of the burst fire facility, but fires bigger projectiles.
