Sounds like a fantastic cheap replacement for helicopter support.
If you pre suppose that modern western battlefields are managed by intel from UAV's then the role of helicopter becomes nearly redundant. a single artillery battalion could provide fire support for an entire battle front.

The real question is whether or not it is a worthwhile improvement on the existing GMLRS unitary warhead or the new fragmenting warhead for battlefield targets.

Why dont they Put the MLRS launcher on a LCS? The SDB or GMLRS could be used for stand off.
And when closer. the effects of MLRS rockets woudl be spectacular on a beach. Doesnt 1 old school MLRS rocket cover a foot ball field? It woudl be the next best thing to having a battle ship. And BTW whats with the Navy, and old school supporting fires solutions. Tehy complain all day about being to close to a beach.  but wont buidl a modern DDG replacment.

Wouldn't the Excalibur and guided 120mm mortar, (now capable of of being mounted on HUMVEEs) be even less expansive? Genuinely curious about their roles and when one should use what.
