"MLRS" (Multiple Launch Rocket System) refers specifically to the M270 MLRS; the term for this class of artillery as a whole is MBRL (Multiple Barrel Rocket Launcher).

The M142 HIMARS (HIgh Mobility Artillery Rocket System) is an MBRL system, but it's not the MLRS, even though it's derived from that MBRL.

Each rocket comes in a separate factory packaged CAN. There are NO BARRELS to an American multiple launch rocket system.

Shesssssh!

Nope --- they're launched from the tubes they're loaded into, which thus double as barrels.

Not reusable (Fiberglass package to weather protect rocket in the pod )... hence 'CAN'.

Ever try launching an MLRS rocket without it's tube? It's not designed to work any other way. Hence, the M270 and M142 are MBRLs --- Multiple Barrel Rocket Launchers

"You've never SEEN one of these used have you?"

The storage tubes containing the rockets used in the MLRS are loaded directly into the launcher, without removing the rockets from them...;

...and the rockets can only be launchd from these tubes, making them de-facto launch barrels;

As it's ammunition is launched only from a cluster of these tubes, the M270 MLRS is a Multiple Barrel Rocket Launcher. I defy you to present photos or videos of an MLRS rocket being launched without it's container-launcher tube (and thus, barrel) in an operational capacity.

Otherwise, deal with it.

Any unguided weapon has to be aimed at the target, for unguided weapons this means sights aligned with a means of launching the projectile in exactly the right direction. For unguided rockets this means either rails or barrels. MLRS uses the latter, that are precision mounted in pods, which are a precision fit in the launcher.
