Subject: Stickers

Anyone ever had one or heard of a weapon having a sticker under operational conditions. If so what were they and what was the cause? For those not familiar with the term it is when a primer initiates the charge but for some reason the developed chamber pressure is not enough to have the round progress through and out the tube so you are left with a chamber with several thousand PSI of hot gasses trapped within.

"Are you refering to the soft metal rotating band around the lower one-third of the projo?" Yes, if it is damaged too much gas might vent out. I suspose a improper ram might cause a sticker, since a portion of the gas will vent past the round. I never witnessed one of those. The giys who did said the event was unmistakable. A large jet of flame erupted from the muzzle and the round fell many thousands of meters short.

I've an account here somewhere from one of the first battery commanders to arrive in Korea, in June 1950. His battery had been using howtizers condemed by the ordinance maintinace unit. The breech block were painted red and there were restrictions on firing them in training. He had expected to draw guns in good condition before embarking, but that was canceled at the last minute. Bringing the condemed guns turned out to be a good thing. They had to abandon the howitzers after enemy tanks blocked the road.

I've hada few second-stage motor failures on Javilin SAM. Worset wone being when the missile popped out of the endcap and landed 15 meters in front of the tube. Embarrassing and a bit scary.

I've heard of the same happening to Dragons. Specificly, it hit 50 meters from the launch. It detonated & blew rocks all over the firng line. We also had the occasional M66 LAAW hang fire in the tube. : O

Had this happen to me when I was a company commander in 1987 at FT Stewart. I was standing on the firing line when a DRAGON was fired abotu 25 meters to my right....hit about 50 - 60 meters in front....big boom and lots of mud and other crap rained on us. Also saw a TOW missile do this in 1982 when fired from an early model ITV. Have had mortars have a round get stuck but those were misfires.
