Subject: Fuel from the Moon? War in Space?
billabong021    1/21/2004 9:17:46 PM
I believe they're hoping to manufacture the fuel on the Moon from the hydrogen in the trapped ice. Bush said the soil of the moon "contains raw materials that might be harvested and processed into rocket fuel or breathable air." He also insinuated that space might also be the fields of war in the future. Whats up with that?

The "lunar fuel" is intended to be used as a half-way point (psuedo half way, before you go pointing out the obvious) for a manned mission to Mars, not as an economical substitute for terrestrial fuels. A prohibitvely expensive piece of the cost puzzle is getting your payload out of Earth orbit with enough fuel left to complete its mission. The ability to refuel on the moon for the voyage to Mars (which would likely consume LESS overall rocket fuel than the segment from Florida to the moon) would greatly ease that burden.

I read that fuel from the moon would actually be helium 3 which had been acumulating on the moon for a very long time thanks to solar flares. In anyway it was considered to be applicable in a fusion reactor, which to date hasn't been constructed (at least not the kind where you get more energy out than you put in).
