My vote would be the Pendragon Cycle by Stephen R. Lawhead. Based on very realistic military and political principles with enough just enough fantasy to keep it from being historical fiction.

I don't much read fantasy anymore...but long ago I loved the way Robert E. Howard described battles. I'm talking Conan here, maybe even King Kull. Elizabeth Moon had some good stuff, and I did enjoy the Tomas Covenant (sp?) unbeliever series, esp. the blind general.
