Let us know what your favorite Military Science Fiction book is.

Personally, Ender's Game is probably my favorite with Starship Troopers a close second. There certainly is a lot of good stuff out there.

This is my first post, so go easy. 1. "Starship Troopers" by Robert A. Heinlein. Still the greatest after all these years. 2. "Hammer's Slammers" series by David Drake. My personal favorite is "The Sharp End". 3. "Forever War" by Joe Haldeman. The "anti-Starship Troopers", I know, but still a great book.

I can agree to these as being my favorites. Growing up next to Currie Barracks (formerly Camp Arthur Currie, and later Canadian Forces Base Calgary until it was finally closed), I have a special attachment to Starship Troopers. I also like Card's parallel "Shadow" novels that follow the Bean character from Ender's Game.

I love Michael A. Stackpoles 'Prince of Havoc', even if only for the line: 'You.Stupid..Davions are hard to kill'. Those who have read it will know what I mean.

Lots of good works referenced here. I too like Enders Game but more for the personal/psychological and individual problem solving ability of Ender. Overall I think I best respect the Falkenburg series of books as they are militarily sound and deal so well on all levels with the dynamics of using armed force. They address tactical, strategic and geo-political issues. Shamelessly they promote and advance the "warrior ethic." Falkenburg is out to make the best of a screwed up universe for himself and "his own!" There are so many good works out there by the likes of Drake, Weber, Heinlein, etc. Fortunately they're all good reads! By the way, while very good, what Clancy writes I wouldn't personally consider as "science fiction." But his stuff is very good (Forsyth's stuff is great too! But again not SF!)

I'm surprised so many people consider Tom Clancy's books to be Science Fiction. He is a great military author, no doubt, and knows weapons and men quite well. But Sci Fi? Where's the science fiction. There's no new science or technology in his work. When I think military sci fi I think of Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" or Dickson's "Dorsai", not Tom Clancy.

My favorite is Red Storm Rising by far. But i would agree that it may not belong in this catagory. Any one remember the short story Steven King wrote in Night Shift. It was about toy soldiers coming to life. May not have been one of the greatest but i thought it was pretty cool anyway. Now i am gonna go buy starship troopers. I have never read it.

Ha, ha! Only too well, SoC. Only too well. Stackpole remains my favorite SF author, but my favorite Military SF book remains "Wolves on the Border" by Robert Charette. Close rivals would be "Lost Destiny" by Michael Stackpole and "Renegade's Honor" by William Keith, Jr. Not really military SF, but Alan Dean Foster's Icerigger trilogy remains my favorite all-time SF series.

A lot of good books mentioned here. Ghettovet you must read Starship Troopers; its as good as people say. Just don't take its uberFascist, species supremacist, Social Darwinist politics seriously; RAH didn't. Forever War. Very effective characters and authoritatively painted battle scenes. It began the process of deromanticising war for me. One missing book, very relevant today: Footfall by Pournelle and Niven. Its about the defeat of an arrogant Alien race with technological superiority. Total Air and Space supremacy are beaten by tactics, patience, improvisation and deception. I won't go into details as the end involves a neat twist. The Gripping Hand. A sequel to The Mote in God's Eye. Excellent space battles and, rarely for an American right-wing author, there isn't an "all Arabs are evil and must die" hidden agenda. A British author not mentioned here yet: Peter F. Hamilton (tories in space). Mostly space-navy and small unit marines/special forces/intelligence action. Imaginative military technology and long involved plots.

Starship troopers is the best (it was a textbook in my middle school.) Forever War is very good as well (Vietnam in space) But recently John Ringo's Legacy of the Aldenata also called the Posleen War series is excellent. Great Tech..lots of authentic/real views of the military. Also, The March UpCountry, March to the Sea and March to the Stars is excellent.

I liked Gilliland's near future 'Revolution from Rosinante' series and the fantasy 'Wizenbeak' series. Revolution is about the US having a civil war from the point of view of a space colony construction manager, and Wizenbeak is agricultural land reform from the point of view of a wizard starting up a new village. Both are excellent. The construction manager has to worry about getting paid, about his project getting terminated, and where he is going to put the ten thousand Texas students exiled for protesting the destruction of the Alamo to make way for an office complex. The Japanese aren't making things easy for him. Wizenbeak is just trying to stay out of a dynastic struggle in his country, but as Trotsky said, "You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you". Then some neighbors get involved in the next book, and some other neigbors in the third. There are some flaws in both. 'Lord Kalvan' by Piper was also a magnificent book. Loved it, and it's probably why I became an inventor.
