Subject: If Earth Was Attacked

How many men can some of the larger nations draft and arm to resist an invasion? China, US, Russia, India, EU all seem to be capapble of putting up quite a fight, and any invasion would likely be highly disadvantaged numbers wise. Its really hard to take enough soldiers from your planet to attack one lightyears away that can arm 100 million plus soldiers. So first off, how many soldiers does the world have in its armed forces right now while we are mostly all at peace? Secondly, how many could we equip to fight? Although there hasnt been another world war to show us the Earth's industrial might, we must have at least doubled what we were capable of producing during the 40's right? The US in its 4 years of total war in WW2 built close to 300,000 combat aircraft. Granted, planes have gotten more complicated and more expensive, but their capability's have also taken a quantum leap. Would we win with sheer numbers alone if we united to defend our planet?

Check out "The Road Not Taken" By Harry Turtledove. In this story, interstellar travel is not hard to do, but Earth missed the technology which allows it. When the invaders arrive, they are less well armed than the people of Earth.

mind you,,watching battlestar galactica , all we'd need is one of those motors from off a viper,, we could build something a lot better than vipers i think i'd go for a starfury type design, 4 vulcan cannons an a couple of those new laser pods would work quite nicely

The thing is that only a major brakethrough by some egghead is needed for us to achive intersteller travel. High level of math will be needed, but that doesn't mean that we would have Phasers and Photan torpedos with sheilded ships. THose are totally defferint technologies. Its like saying that you can't go to the moon if you don'e have laser guns. How's this. the World's first Deep space Shuttle that can achive 2 times the speed of light goes out to a newly descoverd star sys. about 4 Light years from home. We hear nothing of it in 5 years and detict a massive alien fleet of cruisers the size of the ISS and destroyers the size of an Aircraft career. 10 cruisers 5 destroyers 20 shuttle size ships with porjectille weapons, heavy rail guns and a handfull of Nukes the year is 2020. Their is a Lunar settlment of 500 poeple an observatory of 50 people on Mars 2 ISS stations 1 Marsian Space station, the size of Skylab 5 CEV ships 3 Russian Klippers 2 EU Klippers one other Deep space shuttle what happends?

and after all we got a LOT of nukes.and theres no upper yield limit on a fusion bomb, use the moon as a shield and fry their sensors?

Granted that if any alien invaders just wanted to bomb the hell out of us, we probably wouldn't be able to do anything more than strap a nuke to a shuttle and hope the yankee oilrig guy can do it twice in a row. However if alien invaders mounted a full-scale invasion, the number of armed and armoured servicemen we could field would be significant to some extent. If we assume a worst case scenario where the aliens are driving round tanks with 60" thick armour, we can still fight that, we just gotta get a load of really brave, or stupid, volunteers to lure the tanks onto a bridge or something and then blow it, or dig some monstrous pit and cover it with monstrous leaves. Anything less than that would warrant a mock defensive front that fought to the death whilst the rest of the planet's armed forces dug in and prepared for a long gruelling guerrial war. It's been proven effective before (Iraq, Vietnam) and doesn't require a massive financial strain as we won't need so many main battle tanks or battlecruisers or frigates or eurofighters or blackbirds or any high tech gear. I bet we could get by on a couple of thousand tonnes of semtex and AK-47s.

You probably worked it out, but that odd word is actually "guerrilla"
