Subject: If Earth Was Attacked
L4zyB0i    3/9/2006 4:32:29 PM
How many men can some of the larger nations draft and arm to resist an invasion? China, US, Russia, India, EU all seem to be capapble of putting up quite a fight, and any invasion would likely be highly disadvantaged numbers wise. Its really hard to take enough soldiers from your planet to attack one lightyears away that can arm 100 million plus soldiers.

So first off, how many soldiers does the world have in its armed forces right now while we are mostly all at peace? Secondly, how many could we equip to fight? Although there hasnt been another world war to show us the Earth's industrial might, we must have at least doubled what we were capable of producing during the 40's right? The US in its 4 years of total war in WW2 built close to 300,000 combat aircraft. Granted, planes have gotten more complicated and more expensive, but their capability's have also taken a quantum leap.

Would we win with sheer numbers alone if we united to defend our planet?

numbers don't count for all that much anymore. providing more targets to the enemy to be destroyed is only rarely a good tactical option. given the tech gap between them and the very best equiped of us it's pretty much going to be a case of doing what they want where when and how they want.

Aww, come on all we gotta do is send up Jeff Goldblum in a stolen spaceship with a Mac laptop and the aliens are screwed. No problem right? I saw it in a movie so it must be true. buzzard

SARS and bird flu are multinational secret programs to weed out aliens who are vulnerable to earth viruses.

I hate to spoil the fun and take such a thread seriously, but here goes. Everyone assumes that the aliens will be a lot more technologically advanced than we are and will brush aside our military defenses in mere minutes. While it would certainly have to be true that in order to reach Earth they would have to hundreds of years ahead of us in space propulsion technology, that doesn't necessarily mean that they will be more advanced in military technology. For all we know, we humans may be uniquely advanced in warfare technology and our ability to wage war. Hypothetical alien races may be particularly fragile or vulnerable to nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons. Their inability to adapt quickly to our "primitive" technology could be their downfall. "War of the Worlds" and "Independence Day" were only movies, but made some good points. Our planet may be too toxic for alien races, and any technology, even an advanced one, has its weaknesses that can be exploited. We may not be as helpless as we think we are.

What IF we are the Smartist and most advanced? We don't know and we can't rule that out, but such thoughs make for boreing sci fci movies and shows

Anyone thought of orbital bombardment. We would be pretty defenseless against that sort of thing.

"Anyone thought of orbital bombardment. We would be pretty defenseless against that sort of thing." Don't we have the capability to set our ICBMs for orbital explosion?

My gosh. We had better be pretty desperate before we resort to firing off our ICBMs for orbital explosion. One can only imagine what kind of damage that would do to us. Clearly, the aliens would have an advantage over us in space technology, but in order to subjugate us they would need to deploy ground forces. This is the area in which we Earthlings may excel. Consider this: the aliens, because of their advanced space technology, have failed to progress in ground warfare. Perhaps they deploy their ground forces in massed, phalanx formations. They may possess plasma or laser weapons, but because their tactics have not developed like ours have, they deploy such weapons much like European armies used muskets and artillery in the 19th century. The aliens could suffer a significant amount of casualties at the hands of the fire and maneuver armies used by most of the armies on Earth. The aliens would need to adapt, but perhaps because of some martial code they are unable to, and are unable to defeat the puny Terrans.

read an interesting story along those lines where the aliens never developed the tank concept at all. our chances vs aliens would be about the same as an anthill vs a child with a stick. just imagine how well the best roman legions would have done vs a modern tank division and then imagine a far greater tech gap than that.

I should think what would happen would be orbital laser or kinetic strikes on any missiles we launched, thier launch pads, the installations that gave the orders, and all the way back. aircraft would be next, finally they would pop our tanks one by one. maybe they would keep us as pets

It realy depends what the invaders want, and whether we are considered expendable. If they want the resources, scorched Earth from space pretty much leaves us in deep doogy doo. If they want humankind as slaves, food, etc, then there is hope as it is more likely to be ground based. But then again any race that can traversed the stars could probably whip up a dose of viruses to give us all diarrohea which will have us on our knees begging for relief. Global EMP pulses would wipe out most of the worlds' industrial capacity in a heatbeat. Whatever way you look at it, unlike what we see in the movies or on TV, we are screwed.
