The Virginia Guard says about 20 soldiers from a Manassas-based unit are being mobilized to federal duty to provide computer network security in the Middle East.

The soldiers are scheduled to mobilize on Monday. Members of the Data Processing Unit will deploy overseas as a Regional Computer Emergency Response Team providing support in Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Officials say the team's mission will be to help prevent malicious attacks on the computer networks being used for operations in the Middle East. Attacks include unauthorized data access attempts or other activities that would compromise security or degrade operations.

Senior leaders of the team also will advise commanders and senior staff about non-lethal engagement techniques where the Army can use information to influence the local population.
