Subject: Info Warfare - PSYOPs and the photos from Abu Ghraib
Elbandeedo    5/11/2004 1:40:14 PM
Most folks with a military background are highly disturbed by the photos that were recently released. Some are disturbed because it shows American soldiers stooping to saddams level. Some are disturbed because they realize that the release of those photos to the press will cause an already inflamed situation to worsen. American lives will be lost due to the release of the photos.
We, as Americans, have to set ourselves above those we fight to show the world that our cause is just, our hearts are pure.
Still, in the back rooms where the professional interrogators work, it's not all as pretty as we would like the world to know. Which is partly why that sort of thing usually remains "classified" or at least is unspoken. Another reason we don't talk about that sort of activity is that if our enemies learn our tactics they can better prepare their "soldiers" to withstand tactics used by the interrogators.

I think it's very important to remember that nearly every one of the "prisoners" in the photos has American blood on their hands. Does that justify what was done? Not in any way.

For years saddams thugs tortured his opponents (real and imagined)with actual physical torture. Prisoners had to endure having parts of their bodies drilled through with electric drills, cigarette burns, amputation, electricution, maiming. Pretty horrendous stuff.

A friend of mine had a motto: "PSYOP: Because Physical Wounds Heal."

I don't think the bad guys are afraid of physical torture, not like we would think they might be - I think being debased and degraded breaks their spirit more effectively. (Not that a pro would ever resort to the sort of thing we've seen, or to the physical torture!)

While the abuse is most definitely a crime, I personally feel the real crime is the partisan attacks that are spawning from it. Actually, that's only one crime - the REAL crime is that more American servicemen will pay in blood due to the outrage (real of feigned) on the "arab street" caused by these photos.
