Subject: Modern Warfare
thespeakerofthedead    10/3/2003 9:11:17 PM
I believe that modern warfare is b.s. compared to the times of the ancients and the old. I believe that warfare is not what it is as it was.
The warfare of the middle ages and such were when real men were on the battle field. Today it just seems as if oh my god I hit a trigger now I killed 200 people. I am so proud of myself.I love the swords archers and cavalry. I say we should go back to living in a Viking or Medievel Era and say screw it to technology.

Who's with me?

Be my guest. Meanwhile, I will kill you with a laser guided missile launched from an unmanned combat aerial vehicle while I sit in a control room hundreds of miles away.

Actually what I think of military technology is this: For millenia warrior-castes and nomad robbers bullied those who actually worked for a living then someone invented gunpowder and things changed So Here's to the gunpowder that drove back the Ottoman, and humbled the proud robber baron. And here's to the stouthearts of Barbara the gunners saint bless military technology

As a side note. Other warrior-castes scorned Barbara and their name is forgotten Europe's warrior castes took heed and died beside their men on the smoky fields. They still do. A Hollernzollern prince died during WWII fighting well for an evil cause A Windsor prince named Mountbatten was a castaway in the waters of the Meditterranean, birthplace of navies. Another one flew ASW in the Falklands Give me the gunpowder knights over the knights in shinning armor any day. They are more like what a knight should be *by the way I'm a protestant, I just find the idea of the gunners saint pictureous

war isnt to create real men or to test them, its to defend ones country or to enforce your country's foreign policy, so why not save your own with technology and hurt your enemy in doing so? Now WMD's are killing warfare, they are bad and should not exist, in any countries arsenal, but smart bombs, networked warfare and everyting else is very good, but ultimatly its the people who take the risks, pay the price, and do the job, it still takes a lot of courage, you cannot take that away from todays fighting men and women, they are still courageous, just not suicidal.

Technological advances have ALWAYS been a part of warfare, since the cave man putting his hand held flint knife on the end of a stick to Phillip of Macedon (Alexanders Dad) training his troops to use spears 6ft longer than anyone elses, from Romans using ballistae to Edward I using trebuchet, and from the RN developing the Dreadnought to the USN developing the Seawolf. It is common sense to try an get an advantage over you opponent, and this is reflected throughout military history. (Although there is a lot to be said for a good old scrap every now and again!)

But the original post raises this question: in a battle of two equally equipped opponents, who will win, the computer nerd or the warrior?
