Subject: Hacking for Iraq?
Matt Smith    10/1/2002 8:38:16 PM
I'm sure there are plenty of Ba'athist hacks around about Saddam's vicinity.
Whether or not they're any good with a computer is a different question.

From what I'm reading the Russians and Chinese have both been giving soddom and his travelling monkey farm some help in a lot of areas. it would not surprise me to find they have helped train some of his 'wanna-be' hackers to at least use the push-button "script-kiddie" junk. It's surprising what a person can do with the free toys you find on the Internet. One thing in particular that separates the truly talented from the 'wired to Windows' crowd is the ability to hide ones tracks on the Internet. The good ones don't NEED the toys, though they are useful, I'm sure, and they can cover their tracks as well. the ones who are clever enough to download the tools and use them - without learning to cover their tracks first - are the ones that get caught quickly! E.

True, but then a poor workman can then always turn around and blame his tools.

What exactly would be the point of state sponsored virus or hack attacks? Its not as if mission citical military systems are exposed on the internet or any other public network. The only damage such attacks have is to the private sector, and while the damage is significant, it is not crippling for more then a few hours. Worst case scenario is the loss of money. Furthermore, such attacks are much like biological weapons in that they cannot be targeted against one particular enemy effectively; and would be quite hard to insulate all of ones own country against the attack, without alerting the enemy. For the next several years, virus attacks will be a tool of individual miscreants.

Sorry prosen, but there is a need for this. It's just that you don't know what that need is. There is a lot more to information warfare than just computer hacking.
