Think about this for a moment (or two!); Terrorism exploits the medias 'need' for the sensational, the 'heartrending', the need for 'revenge' if you will. Is there any debate to that? If not for nearly instantaneous communcations in full living color, would terror have even the tiniest bit of influence outside of the actual area of effect (I.E. 'rib-cage shrapnel' range, etc.)? Not very much. IRA bombings in Northern Ireland rarely get noticed outside the U.K., same with murder of off-duty soldiers - and you NEVER hear about the drive-bys in the coffee houses where teenagers of the 'wrong' side are massacred - but it happens.
flash to the middle east - it's a focal point right now, due to the sheer number of the mindless attacks.
Most folks on SP are well informed - some better than others. we check news sources, including ones whose views we may not agree with! then we come HERE to chat, post, pontificate about what we've read, what we think about it, and where we think things are going in.... pick a topic.
1. Does anyone doubt that the 'bad guys' pay attention here, as well as other boards, to get a feel for what 'we' are saying? How else can they get a feel for how effective their campaign is? by watching the news reports on TV, by what the press is saying, what the editorials are saying.
2. While SP doesn't POST the IP addy that a person is posting from, don't think that there aren't ways for others to find out. And those who would be Anti-Israeli/Pro-Terrorist and actually have some skill might just want to hammer on the door a little - a ping here, a scan there.
I used to work with a man who gave our little 'section' a briefing - he ended the briefing with some very wise words, "Don't wait for 'cyberwar' to be announced - you are at war everytime you turn on your computer!"
If you have a constant Internet (big 'I') connection, you are vulnerable. You may have the most current patch, your machine (server) may NOT be 'right out of the box' configuration, but the 'script kiddies' get more sophisticated all the time - and most stuff that's out there is SO easy to use, even an old man like me could use most of it. ;o)(GUI interfaces, push button attack sequences, yada yada)
So if SP doesn't post our IPs, how are 'they' getting them (our IP addys) to do scans, or how can you tell FOR SURE it's related to your activity here? To the average user, it's all transparent. you won't know, you CAN'T know for sure.
RE: Zonealarm - someone posted a while back how zonealarm 'sucked' or that it was too basic, that the sort of people who used it probably hang use AOL for their ISP, or something to that effect -
One reply to that thought - some protection is better than none (thought I think the poster made mention of that) and some of us have been spoiled by having very bright and well trained proffessionals protecting our WORK network, so when it comes to 'home box defense', just the ACT of getting something to protect even a little is a step in the right direction. we can't ALL be webmasters/network engineeers/C2P trained! But it definately wouldn't hurt us to be better informed and protected from the mischief!
