Automatic updates can make older software stop working. Especially .NET updates.
There is a lot of older software which depends on .NET 2.X. Newer versions are supposed to be backward compatible, but it isn't always the case.

What ever happened to Unix and especially its windows version (or Redhat Linux)? I guess MS Windows and IOS have the inside track because of all the off-the-shelf applications available for them.

From an industry standard.. I think one of the main issues with Linux and to a lesser degree Unix is the lack of support.  I believe IBM and perhaps others are offering support contracts for particular versions / configurations.. but at the end of the day.. if there is a problem.. "Who ya gonna call?" - Thus Microsoft remains dominant.

And for the supposed "invulnerability" of other systems... is more myth than fact.  The fact is that the resources put into breaching systems that take up something like 90 + % of the market share... are simply magnitudes greater..
