The gatling gun is a better A-A weapon than any single BBL gun. Because it has a much higher rate of fire.As long as you are useing dumb bullets.
The compairison goes like this:
1. 100-110 x 102Gram shells with 11 grams of HEI each per second. With each BBL pointed in a slightly different direction to give a oval patern 8 by 4 mills.
2. A single BBL gun shooting 30-43 shells persecond into a 2-4 mill circle that weigh between 185 and 275 grams each with 22 to 34 grams of HEI each.( the 25x137,27x? and 30x150mm light shell guns.)
3. the heavy shell revolver guns 25x184 and 30x173mm. About ~23 262/360-425 gram shells persecond all at substantialy higher BC and MV.
4. The 25x137mm gatling gun. 83 185 gram shel;ls with 22 grams of HEI each per second.
If you do the math, the only weight/second competiter for any gatling gun is the Giat-793x30mm. However, it has substantial defects as an A-A weapon! It can not fire a burst longer than two seconds per minute without burnning up the BBL. That makes it an A-G gun and nothing more. It has beel historicaly impossable to down an enimy AC with a burst so short.
the two exceptions to the rule were both admited to be accedents. N.L. fired eight rounds from his gatling before he realised he had a 1000MPH overtake speed and pulled off. We suspect the NVA pilot was so starteled by the sonic boom of his passage that he punched out of an otherwise good AC. Two or three 20mms up the tail pipe will not nock down any plane that quickly. Because of the dificulty hitting enimy planes A-A the only viable solution is both IF&F FBW contreols and lots of bullets in the air at the same time. |
