Subject: Arming airplanes with mini-airborne lasers
Darth Vader    5/21/2004 3:56:07 PM
The idea of putting a laser cannon that can shoot an ICBM out of the sky from two hundred miles has been around for years, and there have been prototypes that have been tested, apparently successfully. But what about installing mini-lasers in bombers and having wing-pods for fighters for self-defense and limited attack? They would only have to have a range of five or ten miles, and could be used to shoot down incoming air to air or ground to air missiles to augment the chaff and flares that the plane could put out. They could also be used to take a shot at an enemy pilot in his pit, since the plane would be probably too tough for the laser to kill, but the pilot could be blinded or have their head blown off if the laser hits them. It might not replace air to air missiles in terms of self-defense, but it might give bombers some much needed close-in capability to get rid of fighters coming after them

Supposedly the F-22 was designed to be able to accomdate a L.A.S.E.R. cannon some point in the future. Not exactly an anti-missile pod, but definitely some to give it an edge in a dogfight.

Since the Type 98 MBT mounts something similar I don't see why a fighter or bomber couldn't.

there is a countermeasures device on some aircraft that functions like a "poor man's laser": meaning, it uses an IR beam to "blind" the seeker heads of incoming heat-seekers... but that I guess really depends on the fact that you know it's a heat seeker chasing you, and not a command-guided system. The US Army within 5-10 years plans to have a tactical laser system that is pallet-mounted to be installed in a Chinook helicopter, so I suppose a few years down the road from that (2015-2020) a smaller version for a fighter aircraft could be in production.

There is series talk about placing a directed energy weapon inside the F-35, inside the volume where the lift fan resides in the STOVL variant. The weapon would be powered by a generator hooked to the same clutch assembly used to drive the STOVL lift-fan. You can search around on AviationNow.com to find info in this, back in the late 2002 timeframe. -- Shaken - out --
