Subject: Why does ASRAAM suck?
Shaken    5/5/2004 6:42:25 PM
Looking past the unfortunate acronym selection, what reasons do people have for denegrating the ASRAAM? On paper, it looks like a fine weapon. (There was a noteworthy moment in the AIM-9X vs R-73 discussion when Boris and USN_Mid agreed on ASRAAM as a non-competitor without hesitation).

AIM-9x = 85kg (188lb) link ASRAAM = 87kg (192lb) link Also, I don't understand "1,700 pound in styead of 440" What are you talking about here as neither number can be evenly divided by the missile weights. Can you explain 2kg heavier. Big deal.

The RAAF certainly doesn't think it sucks, the trials for our AIM-9 successor included Python-4 and AIM-9X. Although the results are obviously classified, the eval team considered the results and outcomes pretty unanimous even though the other contenders rated highly. not sure if anyone has seen this: link

dy    RE:Asraam can pull 50g   6/19/2005 9:50:41 AM
The manufacturers web site says it can pull 50g. If the offical statement is 50g it can probably pull more. At that level of manueverability what is the use of comparing it to another missile that can pull 60g or 70g etc? 50g is far more that a pilot or plane can pull. It has helmet mounted and radar cueing and a "block II" program that will add follower capability and improved aerodynamics like tail thrust vectoring etc. The extra range of Asraam over Aim 9X gives it a near bvr capability also. So unless Asraam is full of software bugs or has some sort of inherent conceptual flaw in the software that has not been made public, it is the best IR short range missile on the market and if it is not now, it will be after the "block II" upgrade program. The most absurd thing I can think of was the requirement that Aim 9X be able to use old Aim 9 motors. But that is another story in itself. dy

In the 1980s, Germany was a partner with the UK in the ASRAAM program. But after German reunification, Germany found itself with large stockpiles of the AA-11 Archer and concluded that the AA-11's capabilities had been noticeably under-estimated. In particular, it was found to be both far more manoeuvrable and far more capable in terms of seeker acquisition and tracking. These conclusions led Germany to question certain aspects of the design of ASRAAM, particularly the lack of thrust vectoring to aid manoeuvrability. Germany and Britain could not come to an agreement about the design of ASRAAM, so in 1990 Germany therefore withdrew from the ASRAAM project; Britain continued alone to produce and procure ASRAAM.
