Subject: DAM BUSTERS?
wagner95696    3/14/2004 10:10:23 PM
Has anyone ever fielded a conventional (high explosive) air launched guided missile capable of breaching a modern reinforced concrete dam with a single hit?

IIRC there were some reports running around that the dams had been built to survive multiple TLAM strikes. Hence my comment re "N caps".

Wouldn't need a nuke necessarily that would be just overkill. Theres quite a few ways to attack a dam, most of them have to do with hitting structural weak points. Another way is to create a large enough shockwave of water pressure by detonating bombs underneath the water behind the dam. However I doubt just one explosion would break a dam.

true enough, except the dam in question is an absolute monster. a few engineers I've spoken to have indicated that it would require persistent localised shots with a conventional brace of warheads to get anywhere. I'll see if i can find some dimensions on it, but it makes the Hoover look like a duck pond gate.

How about the MOAB guided into the water near the dam and set to blow 8-15 secs after breaking the waterline?

Lets put it this way: In the files in Pentagon, all solution to the bombing of the Three Gorges are no doubt available - and knowing the yanks: In the event of a war four of five of them would be put into action simultaneously to ensure a lot of wet chinese.

Actually, the Three gorges might come down on it own-Many people believe it'll go down in about 50 years, and it is in an earthquake and landslide prone area... The chinese will plan for quakes, but in the shifty ground area, multiple blasts on the area around and in the resorvior should bring enough rock down to pressure the dam, and enough water force to buckle the superstructure. All without touching the dam itself... Just a though, I'm probably wrong, just wanted to throw my hat in the arena...

Think AGM-86C/D CALCM. Bigger warhead. Really long standoff range. Don't have to break the foundation. Just break the top. Water over the dam does the rest.

Definitely a MOAB. Strengthen the outer shell so it could impact water and sink down to about maybe 100feet, and I would bet the underwater shockwave would be phenomenal. It would be cool to watch, providing you're on the high ground. As for effective delivery, seeing as MOABs are dropped by C-130, little threat may be seen in an approaching cargo plane. Perhaps a Tallboy-type smaller MOAB could be developed to fit the B2, then you just fly in at night. I think it is fortunate the US and allies busted up much of the 9/11 terrorist ring, because NYC would be small compared to the damage caused if a hydro dam such as Grand Coulee or Boulder were ever breached. Catastrophic would not be a sufficient word.

well, i dont know much about the MOAB but i believe it is a Fuel-Air bomb, so wouldn't it need air to go off? And yes if it was possible to detonate a MOAB or even a FOAB under water then it would easily destroy the dam
