Just wondering what people's thoughts are on why the Kurds of Iraq have succeeded in establishing an autonomous vibrant entity where their counterparts in adjoining countries failed?

because the Kurds in Iraq have the "umbrella" of US support and eslewhere they don't.
 
and they are only semi autonomous. they exist only as long as the US supports them.
