Specific points in which you err:

1. yes, the threat is real. I watched the buildings fall and the city burn, a mile down Greenwhich street from here, not on the news. It wasn't faked, wasn't made up. It really happened and the forces that caused it are still out there. There is no, absolutely no comparison with Tonkin. Vietnam NEVER threatened US civilians on US territory. Stop trying to invent a connection that doesn't really exist.

2. The students at Kent State were not "unarmed". They were armed and had destroyed a military facility shortly before the national guard fired. They had no firearms, but they were certainly armed. A B-2 Bomber has no firearms either, and it can destroy buildings just like those kids did. Is it unarmed? Let's just be PC and use the phrase "differently armed" shall we?

3. No state sponsored assassinations by the US? Did you sleep through history class? What do you call Clinton's missile raids on Al-Quaeda? Target practice? Do you really think clinton verified that the camps had no civilians before authorizing the firings? How many times did we go after Castro? And believe it or not, in WWII, we did not simply try to arrest 400 or so Japanese pilots, we destroyed their nation. Could you possibly picture FDR demanding the japanese extradite their pilots for proper trial? And Israel is supposed to arrest terrorists how? Are you aware that every israeli move into territories occupied by Arabs is violently opposed? Arresting 1 man in the Gaza strip would have killed far, far more than 15. It would have been a bloodbath. (but Jews would have died too, and it would have had such great propaganda value, so the arabs would have been happy!) How do you think an arrest can be made if the local populace turns out in force to guard the suspect? If you have a plan by which a suspect can be arrested in Gaza WITHOUT a major bloodbath, you should be talking to the Pentagon, because clearly your a friggin military genius.

4. Yes, Israel could survive without us (possibly) and we without them (certainly). But divisiveness in the target nations provides aid and comfort and no small degree of justification to the terrorists- part of their rationale is, it's OK to kill the jews because if it wasn't, the world would be upset about it. So, isolationism kills. A common front among the nations threatened by fundamentalist violence helps keep the killing down. You sound like you want to be against the killing. So get with the program. Yeah, we could simply nuke everything from Algeria to pakistan and be done with it, but we're trying to handle this in a reasonably civilized manner.
