Subject: How will Obama undo emerging Democracy in Iraq?
sofa    1/31/2009 9:49:18 AM
Simple for Obama to stumble into ceding Iraq to Iranian:
(a) leave Iraq without enough direct US support
(b) show lack of interest in defending Iraq
(c) be an Iran appeaser
Iran probes through obvious surrogate, Obama waffles, Iran solidifies gain. Repeat and accelerate.

Items B and C are given. A is in the works.

sofa    Obama bumbles ensure Iran exerts dominance over Iraq   1/31/2009 10:03:42 AM
The North will resist mightily, but Turkey comes in to crush the Kurds.

When did Obama stop beating his wife?

Seems to me that the Iraqis are perfectly capable of undoing democracy themselves.

Next thing they will ensure me that Obama smells like sulphur and has a pointy tail....

PS

As for withdrawal it all depends on what withdrawal means:
"That means staying the course but changing the course, redeploying to desert bases, not leaving Iraq."
"disengagement. By this, I don?t mean a phased withdrawal, let alone the leap in the dark
of total abandonment. Rather, it would start with a tactical change: American soldiers
would no longer patrol towns and villages, conduct cordon-and-search operations, or
man outposts and checkpoints. An end to these tasks would allow the greatest part of
the troops in Iraq to head home, starting with overburdened reservists and National
Guard units.

The remaining American forces, including ground units, would hole up
within safe and mostly remote bases in Iraq — to support the elected government,
deter foreign invasion, dissuade visible foreign intrusions, and strike at any large
concentration of jihadis should it emerge."

If things unfold the way I believe it will be, then the outcome might surprise you guys. GWB was right on this one: once the violent factors are out of political spectrum, Iraqis can and will run a democracy or their fashion. A democratic Iraq, if their chance isn't robbed away, will push surrounding countries adopting political, social and economic reforms. Too bad, the same can't be said for Afghanistan.

As for Iranians, if they know the current POTUS in person, they'd better be shut up until they have the nuke.
