Subject: Madrid Bomber Acquitted
Plutarch    10/31/2007 3:04:55 PM
The alleged mastermind of the Madrid bombings, and purported link to al Qaeda (via EIJ) was acquitted by a Spanish court for his role in the bombing. The court didn’t believe that his confession was legitimate. http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/012/002yzqpf.asp?pg=1 http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071031/ap_on_re_eu/spain_terror_trial Spanish investigators now say that there is no link between the bombing and al Qaeda, except that the bombers were “inspired” by bin Laden’s message and angry over the Iraq war. Is that a legitimate argument or is this guy guilty as sin, and thus AQ’s fingerprints are on it? Further more only 3 of the 28 people were actually convicted of the murders, and under Spanish law they can only receive 40 years in prison maximum; stupid Euro criminal justice system. So did AQ get away with this one, or not, and does anyone think there is a link between the bombing and Saddam Hussein?

The bombing planning started before the Iraq war. So that throws out the anger about Iraq argument.

"For example, the terrorists who murdered 190 people in Madrid on March 11, 2004 did not target Spain because of its involvement with the U.S.-led Iraqi reconstruction; the group had been planning the Madrid attack for two years, going back to before the American invasion of Iraq. They attacked Spain because it was the Near Enemy—a formerly Islamic land that they hoped to win back for Islam."
