StrategyPage has covered this "problem" on their frontpage lead articles. Seems the Sunnis are voting with their feet.

One wonders if these sunni arab countries will embrace the Iraqis with open arms -  or intern them in "refugee camps" for millenia as they have done with the Arab refugees from the British mandate in 1948, just so they can trot them out when convenient as the "poor pitiful victims" of Shiite forced ethnic cleansing, in contrast to same meme, but change it for "Da JOOOS"   "forced" ethnic cleansing.

swhitebull -   a dilemna indeed for these countries - how to label those that left voluntarily, and how to treat their "bretheren."

Well last nite an interview with some Jordanian official suggested it is America's problem, and very unfair for Jordan to bear the burden of 700,000 refugees. He declined to give a number on how many US visas should be issued, but I am sure its in 100,000s. The current US policy is referring refugees to UN--meaningless. But I expect a mass exodus from Arab countries to the West. Jordan is correct-they did not start the war and should not be unintended victims. Of course the refugees to the West will have to be rather discreetly allowed to enter legally considering public reaction here and EU.

There are two million Iraqi refugees living abroad, and 1.6 million IDPs in Iraq.  To state they left "voluntarily" may be "true", but leaves out important facts like they left because of the violence affecting their homeland (violence the US has failed to stop), and the utter lack of jobs in Iraq.  Pretty soon though it will boomerang on the US.  Already Syria is denying refugee status for most of the Sunnis, stating they can only stay for 30 days then they have to go back to Iraq to re-apply.  What happens when these countries shut their borders and the Sunnis are faced with Shiite death squads?

I was just about to write and say I agree with you on your comment about Iraqi refugees in Jordan when you go and spoil it with this silly comment. Only 1.5% of Australia's population is from the "stans", it is not likely to become much more and with the odd exception of the likes of Taj El-Din Hilaly and a few gangs of Lebanese origin, most Muslims in Australia do not cause trouble and are just as peace-loving as the rest of us.

Bankstownistan or Lakembaistan maybe, but Aussiestan? No.

Cheers.

I don't know if it is a good Idea for the U.S. or E.U. to accept more than 10,000 Iraqi refugees combined. Europe already has a hard time trying to intregrate their muslim populations and if Iraqi refugees come in massive waves, along with it might come a conservative Islamic mindset that might clash with Western Values.

It's the bullies who once oppressed the Kurds and Shia and who are now getting their comeuppance.
